Exit poll shows 93% of Crimeans back joining Russia

Crimeans have voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining former political master Russia as one regional leader says the peninsula will apply to join Russia on Monday.

Exit polls showed 93% of the voters in favour of leaving Ukraine and joining Russia in the most serious redrawing of Europe since Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia.

The result comes after Ukrainian prime minister Arseny Yatseniuk vowed to hunt down the ‘separatist leaders’ in Crimea, warning that the “ground will burn under their feet.”
