A detail of the arm joint on a one-of-a-kind Exosuit, a next-generation atmospheric diving system capable of taking a diver down 1,000 feet (305 metres) at surface pressure, on temporary display at the American Museum of Natural History, New York.

The hard-metal suit offers divers protection from the ocean’s pressure while maintaining the dexterity and manoueverability to perform delicate tasks, such as sampling and imaging marine biodiversity with high-resolution underwater cameras. It will be tested as a scientific tool this July off the coast of New England on the Stephen J. Barlow Bluewater Expedition, partly sponsored by the museum.
