Turkey: AK Party deputy says Angela Merkel’s recent ski accident a curse as a result of her opposing Erdogan over the Gezi protests

Burhan Kuzu, the head of the parliamentary Constitution Commission and a deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), has linked German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s skiing injury to her stance over the Gezi Park protests in Turkey.

“Merkel cracked her pelvis. She now walks with crutches. Don’t take it as a curse, but it seems like Merkel has been crushed by the wrath of Gezi,” Kuzu said about Merkel, who raised the strongest opposition to the Turkish government during the Gezi protests that took place in June 2013.

Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told reporters on Monday that the chancellor had suffered what she first thought was just a bruise to her left rear pelvic area while cross-country skiing but doctors later determined it was an “incomplete” bone fracture that will require her to rest for three weeks.

Merkel would continue to preside over cabinet and government meetings, using a walking aid to get around, he said.
