A newly-wed “freewill marriage” couple was gunned down near Dargah Chattan Shah in Khairpur, Sindh province, allegedly by the woman’s brother and his accomplices. The brother surrendered to the police and confessed that he killed his sister Shahnaz because she had run off with Zahid Hussain.
“My late husband’s brother Zahoor raped me and now claims that I had married him,” a mother of four told media on Monday, in Bahawalpur, Punjab province. She said that she had complained to the police but they had sided with her in-laws. “My in-laws claim that I had married Zahoor,” she said, “Zahoor, has paid a nikah khawan [witness to a marriage], Maulvi Azam, 200,000 rupees ($1920) to say that he had registered my marriage with Zahoor.”.
A 12-year-old bridegroom and the 10-year-old bride’s father were arrested on Monday on charges of child marriage in Gujrat, Punjab. The police were informed that Zafar Iqbal, a resident of Phularwan village, was marrying his 10 year old daughter to a 12-year-old boy.
Peshawar, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa: Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan has ordered re-polling to be held in all polling stations where women were barred from voting. “The decision to bar women from voting is clear-cut and in line with the customs of our people,” said Maulana Hidayatur Rahman, a resident of one of the affected areas said, “Any woman who would have voted would have been punished.”
A new under-construction middle school for boys was damaged when a bomb planted by unidentified militants inside the building exploded in Hangu, K-P, on Monday. Many schools across K-P and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas have been destroyed by militants, with over a hundred destroyed in Mohmand Agency alone.
