Toronto cop charged with second-degree murder in Sammy Yatim case

TORONTO — A Toronto cop is charged with second-degree murder for last month’s shooting death of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim on an empty streetcar.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been probing the teen’s death since he was shot multiple times July 27 while wielding a knife during a confrontation with police, a shooting that was captured on video and sparked public outrage.

SIU director Ian Scott said in a statement Monday he has “reasonable grounds to believe that (Const. James Forcillo) committed a criminal offence.”
