“Dear Minister Toews,
I am concerned that civil servants in your department and the RCMP have retained some of the attitudes of the old Liberal administration and the contempt for Canadians that led to Bill C-68 and the long-gun registry.
Since 2010, the RCMP has reclassified seven firearms to prohibited status. All of these reclassifications occurred without real public notice or public consultations. Two of these firearms had been sold in Canada for over 20 years.
I am writing to you today to request the establishment of a permanent “Firearms Experts Technical Committee” to oversee such things as firearms reclassifications and other changes to the Firearms Act that have a direct effect on stakeholders. The committee would take over responsibility for dealing with issues relating to the regulations of the Firearms Act from the bureaucracy.
I am also requesting that you impose a moratorium on firearms reclassification until the permanent committee is in place.
I would like to thank you for all you have done as Minister to protect and promote the safety of all Canadians.”
