Tunisian national linked to suspect in alleged Via terrorism plot was stopped from returning to Canada
In mid-2012, Abassi applied for and received a student permit to study chemical engineering at Universite Laval in Quebec City. Just a few months later, at the end of 2012, he returned to Tunisia, the source said.
While his student visa remained valid, it was not one that allowed multiple entries, which meant he had to re-apply earlier this year for an entry permit. The application was denied, the source said, likely due to his connection to Raed Jaser and Chiheb Esseghaier — the two men who would later be charged in connection with the alleged Via plot.
“When we became aware of security concerns, he was back in Tunisia and I think his study permit was not renewed,” Immigration Minister Jason Kenney told reporters Friday.
