…It is bad enough that the government will expand its powers of surveillance. What’s worse is that it will circumvent the courts, the one institution with the power to place limits on the state’s ability to use its agents as tools of coercion, oppression, and censorship.

Update from the comments: Trupeers – We may well soon have to face a choice between privacy and freedom, and hopefully choose the latter. It is too easy to think they are always on the same side. This was the argument of David Brin in his 1998 book The Transparent Society. Will Technology Force us to Choose Between Privacy and Freedom?
