Speaking freely – St. John’s Telegram on “Bloodhound Barbara Hall”

St. John’s Telegram – Speaking freely

Are you offended by this editorial? Just call your local Human Rights Commission. You’ll incur no fee, and you could force us to publicly apologize and even make us pay a financial penalty.

Sound far-fetched? Not if you’ve been reading Maclean’s magazine.

For more than a year, Maclean’s has been battling a complaint filed with the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) against their publication of an excerpt from Mark Steyn’s book, “America Alone.” The excerpt – and the book as a whole – takes demographic facts and figures about the growth of Islamic populations in the Western world and attempts to parse its implications.

Stein is renowned throughout the world as a bull in a china shop. His arguments about Islam are alarmist and a tad intolerant. But it is not hate speech. And its suppression would be a devastating blow to free speech. How could anyone argue about the history and demographics of Islam again? Are we all to be muzzled?

And while we’re at it, let’s make sure old-fashioned bloodhounds like Barbara Hall are kept off the executive roster. If we start seeing racism under every rock, all hope is lost.

The rest, I like that – Bloodhound Barbara Hall, not sure who that Stein fella is though;)
