Self-driving trucks threaten one of America’s top blue-collar jobs

Trucking paid for Scott Spindola to take a road trip down the coast of Spain, climb halfway up Machu Picchu, and sample a Costa Rican beach for two weeks. The 44-year-old from Covina now makes up to $70,000 per year, with overtime, hauling goods from the port of Long Beach. He has full medical coverage and plans to drive until he retires.

But in a decade, his big rig may not have any need for him.

The romance (and freedom) of the open road is speeding out of our lives. The trucker, the last cowboy of our changing lives, is leaving. (sob)

Good, but Hank snow did wonders with that song, faster with the lyrics and a smoother delivery.

      • Waffle

He did. I wasn’t aware of Snow’s version until just now.

I’ve logged a lot of miles in a little passenger vehicle – Toronto/Dallas and Dallas/Vancouver. I always enjoyed driving at night. There’s a kind of community on the road that is amazing. I didn’t have a CB, but I sort of learned the language of the road and always yielded to those 18-wheelers that were steaming up behind me. I still smile when I remember how they acknowledged the courtesy.

Trucks are responsible for a lot of accidents on Ontario 400 series highways, perhaps now they’ll have no need for drivers that are temporary foreign workers.

  • BillyHW

Sometimes I wish I could drop everything and just do trucking for 6 months. It’ll be a sad day when trucking is no more.

Ever hang out at a truck stop and see what gets out of those things?… Stranger things than at a Grayhound Bus depot.

  • canminuteman

Driving trucks employs more men in North America than any other single trade. This is going to be bad.

    • BillyHW

Somehow the NY Times will find a way to claim that women, minorities, and children will be hardest hit.

      • canminuteman

Well they are. They are the ones who spend the money that the men make.

Why do you think all ads depict men as dufi (plural of dufus)? Men might make more that women, but women do all the actual spending.

My son hauls steel locally; the only job he wanted. He is a natural behind the wheel. Many will be broken hearted if there is no place for them.

Many a few Teamsters boys with utility knives vs truck tires could reverse this robot take over.

Gee, cheapskates at ABCD Transport, if you hired human drivers I might respect you and leave you alone, but since you value profits more than people ……..

Things did not work out so well for the Luddites, and any attempt to slow or stop a better, cheaper, or more advanced technology or method, usually ends up badly.
