Ethiopia to throw away 69 million ‘poor quality’ condoms: £1.38million of international aid money wasted

Ethiopia has decided to throw away 69 million condoms paid for by international donors to fight the spread of AIDS because they are extremely ‘poor quality’.

The country’s Pharmaceuticals Fund and Supply Agency (PFSA) bought the condoms in a $2million (£1.38million) contract from an Indian company.

The agency’s director Meskele Lera said said they were taking action to get the suppliers to ‘reimburse the money and cover all costs in the discarding process’.

do the math 69 mil condoms for 2 mil in cash is about 3 cents a rubber. I remember our students association getting a bulk deal from a big name brand supplier and they were still 25 cents a piece in the early 90’s.

You mean they were not the “Made in China” products?

It’s a well known fact that Muslims were the first to discover sheepskin condoms. Rumor has it at some time soon they’ll figure out how to remove them from the sheep.

And besides, condoms don’t give as much protection against AIDS in Africa as proper sanitation and clean water.
