    Another very little remarked feature of the front was a political decision by the French that no “permanent type” deeply dug allied facilities of any sort were permitted as that would open the government to accusations that they gave lesser priority to ejecting the hated occupiers now on sacred French soil. The fact that the German military had made constructing such underground artillery proof permanent living quarters on their side a high priority cut no ice with the stupid idiots in charge on our side.

    Very moving. My grand father survived that war, but not for long, he only lasted 6 years and died a broken man.
