Ryerson University And The New Lysenkoism

Ryerson… The multicultural lab: Teaching for inclusion in the STEM disciplines

Science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) disciplines have been traditionally understood as empirically-based, culturally-neutral spaces. Often, this has meant that instructors in these fields may not see a direct connection between their learning spaces and diversity initiatives.

“…When the rest of the scientific world were pursuing the ideas of Mendel and developing the new science of genetics, Russia led the way in the effort to prevent the new science from being developed in the Soviet Union. Thus, while the rest of the scientific world could not conceive of understanding evolution without genetics, the Soviet Union used its political power to make sure that none of their scientists would advocate a genetic role in evolution.

It was due to Lysenko’s efforts that many real scientists, those who were geneticists or who rejected Lamarckism in favor of natural selection, were sent to the gulags or simply disappeared from the USSR. Lysenko rose to dominance at a 1948 conference in Russia where he delivered a passionate address denouncing Mendelian thought as “reactionary and decadent” and declared such thinkers to be “enemies of the Soviet people” (Gardner 1957). He also announced that his speech had been approved by the Central Committee of the Communist Party. Scientists either groveled, writing public letters confessing the errors of their way and the righteousness of the wisdom of the Party, or they were dismissed. Some were sent to labor camps. Some were never heard from again.

Under Lysenko’s guidance, science was guided not by the most likely theories, backed by appropriately controlled experiments, but by the desired ideology.

Ryerson Goes Lysenko

  • The Butterfly

    Ryerson “University”.

    There, fixed it for you.

    • Exile1981

So glad I turned down their offer of admittance.

      • Smart move.

      • Clausewitz

Somebody has to keep Dork U from being the biggest joke in post secondary education.

    • V10_Rob

      You misspelt ‘kindergarten’.

  • Rosenmops

Methods of instruction and strategies that instructors can use within and beyond their classrooms to enhance the access, retention and achievement of under-represented students in the STEM discipline

    As a teacher in a STEM discipline…

    • Exile1981

So idiots too stupid to make it in STEM degres are trying to dumb them down for other idiots.

      • Yup. They want to remake man in their desired image.

      • Americadies

Allowing politically correct insanity to destroy education will be the death of our society.

        • Exile1981

          “is” not “will be”

  • Alain

Hey, go for it and then you will find that diplomas issued by Ryerson are not worth the paper they are printed on even in STEM disiplines.

    • BillyHW

There’s a reason they call it Rye High.

The interesting thing about Lysenkoism is that it’s foundation is Lamarckian heritability theory. I started undergrad biology at university in 1978 and took a genetics course about two years later (the text book was written by Suzuki – whatever he is now, he did know Mendalian genetics and fruit fly farming very well) This was just before molecular biology and biotech really started to take off. During the course Lamarckian heritability and Lysenkoism was taught as a cautionary tale about subscribing to incorrect theories and allowing them to be used for political ends. And that narrative held until about a decade later while I was finishing off grad school and then all these interesting stories started circulating about how Lamarckian heritability might actually be a fact after all. And now there is evidence for what is called transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. The trouble is that the pitchfork mob intimidating scientists and preventing them from looking into new aspects of evolutionary adaptation are now the leftist atheists in league with academics who have a stake in the status quo (like Dawkins). These people are convinced that only Darwinian evolutionary is the one true faith, despite it being about 80 years out of date as a theory. Anything else smacks of I.D./creationsim. And Dawkins doesn’t make much of an effort to disabuse them of this notion – because it sells his books. So the rot is coming from all sides on the left. Generally speaking, all social engineers should be told to just fack off and leave science alone. If it weren’t for them we would probably have a cure for cancer and be colonizing other solar systems by now. In fact, we would probably be better off if funding for science was allocated via lottery to foil political interference.

    • Clausewitz

I’ll give Suzuki his props when it comes to sexing fruit flies, however he knows shit about almost all subjects outside of his pervue.

    • BillyHW

There is nothing so intransigent and closed-minded as scientists in love with a theory.

  • Clausewitz

Sounds like the curriculum committees now running roughshod through the Ontario educational establishments. The last of us conservative empirical educators are fighting a losing battle at keep truth at the for front of the classroom.

  • Americadies

Sad we want to allow political correctness destroy education.
