Brown University Students Flip Out After White Person Sings Hindu Chants

A simple musical performance at Brown University became a source of tremendous controversy Thursday night after student protesters denounced it for having Hindu chants sung by a white woman.

It’s so clumsy one wonders why it works.

    “You’re a racist!”

    “No I’m not!”

“Oh yes you are! You just don’t realize it!”

“Oh… so what should I do?”

    “What I tell you.”

A giant “fuck off” is so obviously in order, one wonders why a Trump hasn’t appeared everywhere.

  • Kathy Prendergast

I’m sure they get equally enraged whenever a Chinese person plays a Beethoven sonata.

    • Ed

Indeed. Look at the graduating class at Juilliard and set up the pickets immediately.

    • Waffle

      Like this guy?

(Had to use the Bach clip — couldn’t separate his Beethoven piece from a much longer vid)

      • DavidinNorthBurnaby

        Inexcusable cultural appropriation!

        • Clausewitz

      • Kathy Prendergast

Well, Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, Wagner, Handel, Haydn, Mozart…German and Austrian people should be protesting virtually every classical music concert in the world as gross “cultural appropriation”.

    • John

Don’t tell them George Harrison played the sitar.

  • Alain

OMG is there no limit to their absolute ignorance? Although Hinduism originated in ancient India, it is not restricted to there. It is the major religion in Bali where the people are not Indian nor do they look Indian. Perhaps the ignorant students should travel to Bali to tell them they have no right to their religion. I keep hoping somewhere there will be people with enough common sense and courage to tell these idiots to fuck off every time they trot out this crap.

  • Lupus

The last time I checked Hindu was a religion not a race. I had an East Indian friend urge me to embrace the Hindu faith. I am very obviously of northern European heritage.

    What a load of BS.

    • Alain

Of course there have been converts in many countries, so you are correct that it is not a race. Considering the idiots consider Islam a race, I guess it is understandable. Awaiting the announcement of the Catholic race, the Christian race, the Buddhist race and all others.

  • Norman_In_New_York

George Harrison is spinning in his grave.

    • DavidinNorthBurnaby

      Many many upticks.

  • Minicapt

Apparently they complained using the English language.

    • Will Quest

Listening to Hindu songs absolutely requires wearing ear-plugs !

  • canminuteman

All these people who are bitching in English, who aren’t English, should find another language to bitch in so I don’t have to listen to them.

    • DavidinNorthBurnaby

Best they find somewhere else, more to their liking, to bitch as well.

Going to Ms. Grossman’s website, I get the distinct impression that she is a full fledged practitioner/follower of bhakti yoga. And the kirtan is a devotional expression within bhakti yoga. I guess that means that converting to Hinduism is “cultural appropriation.”

    • Kathy Prendergast

Well, it wasn’t long ago that a public outdoor yoga event was canceled on a Canadian campus because some students decided that yoga was “cultural appropriation”. I wish I could say this is a joke but it’s not. The inmates are well and truly running the asylum.

  • Waffle

I wonder what these ignorant little Brown Shirts would do about this fellow? He is a Turkish Muslm (lapsed):

    • Kathy Prendergast

SJWs basically hate music; it’s the way humanity responds universally to it, regardless of culture, that they can’t stand, plus it gives people too much damn pleasure. Also, music is and always has been unavoidably elitist, in that excelling in it requires a rare combination of inborn talent and excruciatingly hard work, a fact most SJWs can’t stomach.

    • Brett_McS

Especially since Mozart was also, in that piece, making fun of the Turkish street musicians in Vienna.

    • DavidinNorthBurnaby

Well, we know what the penalty for apostasy is.

  • Kathy Prendergast

I’ve sung Hebrew songs although I am not Jewish; gospel songs although I am not black, and Japanese songs although I am not Japanese; should I take out the self-flagellating scourge now or later?

    • Alain

Not need to do any self-flagellating scourge. Good for you.

    • I think self-flagellation may in fact be cultural appropriation.

  • simus1

500 years ago pathetic creatures like these would have been screaming “Burn the witch” while jumping up and down on top of a dunghill with the best view of the execution site. And they would have sweated through an exhausting much more productive day before the fun started.

  • There’s a Sunday morning kid’s show on called The Chica Show and they have a little black kid wearing a viking helmet.

Once you know how to look for it, cultural appropriation is everywhere.

    • DavidinNorthBurnaby

Does the helmet have horns? Because they didn’t really of course. Just sayin’.
