Windsor high school basketball star found to be 30 year old “Refugee”

In a stunning development, a star center for a Canadian high school basketball team was exposed as a 30-year-old African refugee, leading to his being detained in connection with the Immigration Refugee Protection Act.

According to the Windsor Star, 30-year-old South Sudanese native Jonathan Nicola was a star center for the Central Catholic Comets throughout the 2015-16 season. The 6-foot-9, 202-pounder spent the previous months during the academic year living with Central Catholic basketball coach Pete Cusumano as part of the Canada Homestay program while he lived in the country on a student visa.

That visa is now likely to be terminated as a result of the large discrepancy in Nicola’s age. While he has been presenting himself as a 17-year-old, the Canada Border Services Agency has obtained evidence that purports to show Nicola is actually 30 years old, making him a full 12 years older than the eldest competitors on most of the teams he played against during the 2015-16 season.

Boy that’s the gnarliest lookin 17 yr. old I ever saw!

  • I hear the words of John McCallum echoing in my head: “No, no, all the refugees are vetted — very carefully vetted by various agencies”.

Although this particular “refugee” probably slipped in under Harper’s watch, nevertheless the Liberals’ complaint about Harper was he was too strict on the refugee file!

    • Amazing isn’t it.

Vetted is the right word, this guy’s as big as a horse.

How could anyone have possibly believed that great brute was 17 years old?

Very few 17-year-old boys have the strength and muscle mass of full-grown men in their mid 20s to early 30s; many have not even achieved their full height yet at that age. And even if they do, any fool can tell from their faces the difference between a 17 and 30 year-old.

I expect the parents of all the teenage boys who had to compete with him will be up in arms about this, not to mention all the parents of the 14-to-17-year-old girls in that school.

Truly amazing how one sees what one wants to see and hears what one wants to hear.

  • David Smith

He self-identifies as a 17 year old, who are we to deny him his claim.

So what’s a 7 foot Bantu doing in Canada? What’s he got to offer us?

What the hell is going on here?

  • Dana Garcia

    Has a 6’9″ 17-year-old ever existed?

What a scam. I’m surprised the opposing teams didn’t raise a ruckus about an obvious ringer. They wuz robbed!

    • Millie_Woods

He told the school he was 5’21”. How were they supposed to tell the difference, they’re only teachers.

    • Actually really huge teenagers do in fact exist, even younger than 17. But it’s usually more of a North American/Western problem — the widespread use of steroids, with all ages (although sometimes it’s genetic or simply the result of a generation of young people with better nutrition).

Whenever one sees someone with huge exaggerated muscle development one is inclined to think: “wow, that guy must be on a very disciplined weight-lifting and workout program, maybe he’s training for the Olympics”. It’s the wrong assumption to make anymore — there’s a good chance that he’s on steroids purely for the body image effect. And I understand ‘roids can be addictive.

He’s following the example of hockey teams from Indian lands. As a ten year old I played against “kids” with moustaches.
