Israel vows ‘never to withdraw from Golan Heights’ after annexing the strategic area between the nation and Syria

In an historic cabinet meeting in the occupied territory Golan Heights, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed ‘never’ to return the disputed region to Syria.

The Israeli Prime Minister delivered the impassioned speech during a cabinet meeting held in the Golan Heights for the first time.

He said the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights would ‘forever’ remain in his country’s hands as his cabinet held its first meeting in the territory.

And why should they? Twice it’s been used to launch invasions to destroy Israel. Hard to feel any sympathy for failed aggressors whining that it’s not fair.

That’s what happens to you if you don’t sign a Peace Treaty and your country folds…

Good for Netanyahu . I hope future PMs behave the same way.

How long has Israel had the Golan Heights? How many times have they fired into Syria? When Syria had the Heights how many times did they fire into Israel? Case closed.

Syria held the Golan Heights for 44 years (1923-1967). Israel has held it for 49 in addition to the first five years of the Mandate before it was unceremoniously stolen from them by the French with British consent.

I still wonder if the Israelis wouldn’t have been better off if they’d gone to Canada after the Second World War and established a community similar to what the Icelanders did in Manitoba.
They could have built Jerusalem in Western Canada’s green and pleasant land.

the historical attachment of Jews to this land is all powerful, even though nationalism these days is politically incorrect. Recently, a survey of 156 nations on which people are the happiest ranked Israel as #11. This wasn’t as high as Canada, but it is ahead of the U.S., Britain, France and Germany. Here is a bit of Israel that you won’t see on news broadcasts.

            That’s pretty cool.
I have to say that I hope that I’m not misunderstood.
I’d say some of my best friends are Jews but after nearly twenty years of marriage all of my friends seem to have melted away.
Mainly because mostly all of them never had kids of their own.
So, I’m left to cite my absolute reverence for Jewish comedians as a cultural touchstone.
I enjoy reading your point of view on things.

You still didn’t answer the central question. During the Israeli occupation of the heights they have never fired at civilian targets from that strategic position. That can not be said of the Syrians during their times there.

So far, Israel has successfully stayed out of the Syrian carnage, and by now, the parties are so weak that any attempt to retake it will result in further military drubbing.

Israel made a bad decision when it withdrawed from the Gaza strip giving Hamas a much easier opportunity to attack Israel. Hopefully Israel won’t make the same mistake by withdrawing from the Golan Heights.

I believe that Israel under a conservative gov’t will continue to display common sense and hold the high ground to protect her citizens.

      • DMB

Hopefully Israel will stay that way.

I would limit that to a truly conservative government, since it was a supposed “conservative” government that expelled by force Jewish families and businesses from Gaza to give it to the Arabs.
