• Was it ever a requirement?

    • Ed Ellison

There probably was until the bureaucracy got stuffed full of immigrants of the same persuasion.

I recall having to take taxis over 20 years ago from the airport to my hotel in more than one Canadian city and having a driver who could not communicate in English. I suspect the situation has gotten a lot worse and isn’t limited to Toronto.

  • Gary

Justin is also dropping the English/French skills to get out Citizenship.
This is just more Government jobs for translators to man the Phones.

I thought the NDP told us how all these cab drivers had phd’s as Doctor’s and Engineers that suffered racism because they could get hired in Canada and were forced to drive a taxi.
Gee Peggy Nash, do you think that having poor English skills might have been behind the plight.

Or their degrees are from places know for issuing degrees based on money donated vs actusl learning.

Most pakistani universities turn out engineers with no skills

      That’s a great observation.

So basically they didn’t have the spine to require Uber to follow the same regulations as taxis, so in order to level the playing field they just scrapped the regulations. And does anyone really believe anything after the comma in this clause – “reduces regulatory burden, while maintaining requirements for public safety and consumer protection”?

    • Not really, but Uber is here to stay and Toronto’s taxi licensing was a horrid mess.

  • Dana Garcia

Robot Uber cabs are looking better all the time.

Just a couple of weeks back I read a news item in a Auto Section of a paper where Mercedes Benz got an Order from Uber to buy 100,000 S-class sedans which are over $90,000.00 each .
Uber is not going away and nor is the foul order in far too many of the Toronto Taxi’s.
FORD stopped making the Crown Vic around 2012 which was sad because the V8 6 passenger car got better Highway mileage than the original 4cyl Pinto .
In the mid 1990’s FORD only allowed Fleet sales , but now the Police are stuck with a smaller car while most taxi’s can’t carry 4 people while the trunk it pretty tight for even the luggage of just 2 people.

  • And they wonder why people want alternatives.

  • Bernie

If the Cab Driver does not speak any official language, how can he take you to your destination? Don’t pay them as well. They can not complain because they do not speak any official language!

  • Ron MacDonald

It’s time to change that bylaw.

  • tom_billesley

Don’t you need to know an official language to get a Canadian driving licence?

    • Liberal Progressive

They must see it as racist to demand they know English or French.

So we aren’t seen as racists I guess anybody who plans on riding in a cab needs to learn Urdu, Arabic and Somali.
