Americans Think CEOs Make a Fraction of What They Actually Do

Americans aren’t too clear how much CEOs actually take home in compensation, but even so, they believe these corporate leaders make too much money.

This comes from a new survey on the public’s perception of CEO compensation, led by the Rock Center for Corporate Governance, an initiative of Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School. The survey queried 1,200 Americans on what CEOs make, how they should be paid for performance, and whether government should be involved.

Many so-called CEO’s are incompetent fools who rise to the top by being at Wall Street’s beck and call. Once they get themselves into a huge loss dead end jackpot they pick up their big severance package and depart. The only viable CEO replacement is a sleaze whose buddies are gatekeepers who can OK financial rescue money. The team then gets busy “saving the shareholders” at least a few scraps from the ongoing butchery and merger dance parties.

I don’t begrudge billionaires who are running successful companies that actually produce a good or service in demand.

It’s the ones whose only apparent skills are cultivating the right connections or moving money in the corrupt casino of the financial industry that are the problem. And there are far too many of them.

I just got my proxy package from IBM. 58 of the 64 pages is about how much the board is paying itself. Just the board. And these are people who are paid in the vicinity of a half million dollars a year in cash for essentially a part time job. Then toss in 10’s of thousands of shares of free stock. Then if you’re Ginni Rometty, the CEO and Chairperson, you get about $14 million compensation, $5 million in non cash compensation and a 150,000 shares of stock. For a company that’s seen 17 straight quarterly declines, a stock price drop of 40% on her watch, headcount reduction in the US to fewer than 50,000 people. And these people each sit on each other’s boards and the boards of a dozen other companies.
