The Anne Frank Effect and the Truth About the Dutch

Because of Anne Frank’s Diary, there’s a general impression that the Dutch did what they could to protect their Jews from the Nazis.

I did not know that. This is very bitter-sweet for me. One of the earliest books I read (when I was about 10) on this terrible period was called “Their Brother’s Keepers”. It was a collection of short stories and anecdotes about the Dutch who sheltered and protected Jews. One unforgettable story was about the Dutch fishermen who risked their own lives and those of their families to ferry Jews across the dangerous sea to safety in England.

One of my uncles served as the cook to the Irish Regiment of Canada. He “adopted” two little Dutch boys who were starving as a result of the Nazi occupation. They never forgot him. When they grew up, they came to Canada to thank him and came back again to pay their respects at his funeral.

I think it has everything to do with individual people rather than whole nationalities, so I do not find it as disturbing. In just about every nationality at the time there were individuals who chose good over evil even at the risk of their own life and of their family members. Even among the Jews there were those who betrayed their own people and profited by it. Soros comes to mind.

I too (as a Jew) was shocked when I found out that contrary to the myth of the heroic Dutchman who stockily endured and resisted the Nazi occupation and had to resort to eating tulip bulbs etc – when the truth be told – actually collaborated and happily handed their Jews over to the Nazis.
So much for all the romantic stories I was told as a child in public school about the Dutch queen coming to Canada during the war, having her hospital room declared sovereign Dutch territory when she gave birth to her daughter and bestowing a lifetime supply of tulip bulbs to Canada to show gratitude and how the Dutch resisted the Nazis and protected their Jewish neighbors.

And *now* they’re gladly handing themselves over to Islamic conquerors. “Dutch courage”, eh?

That is quite the bit of non-education. What is your point?
Should the the Jews hate the Dutch because some Dutch preferred to Live rather than die. This is really dumb. Canada turned away Jews. Many Countries did.
Are you attempting to make Enemies of your Friends ? or are you inferring that
    The Jews have no Friends?
