Petition to Establish Western Civilization Requirement Sparks Outrage at Stanford

A petition to establish a two-quarter Western Civilization requirement for undergraduates at Stanford University has sparked controversy across campus.

In the weeks since the editorial board of the Stanford Review, a student-run conservative-leaning newspaper on campus, created a petition to establish the requirement, supporters have been branded racists and other derogatory names and confronted in dining halls, according to the publication’s editor-in-chief.

Keep your children away from University.

  • “Keep your children away from University.” – Yes, unfortunately, it looks like that they will be fed more poison than good things nowadays.

……further proof of the decline of Western Civilization
Chumlee from “Pawn Stars” has been arrested for guns and drugs after police raided his home while investigating an alleged sexual assault

“Keep your children away from University.”
I can see the point. I can see a major exception: STEM subjects (if they are up to hard work). Even there idiots are talking about feminist glaciology and other nonsenses.
I would suggest that they should have a CLEAR career plan which necessitates a university degree. Usually, a STEM subject makes this easier to see. Then stick to your plan.
Lastly, have a hobby / outside interest where you don’t have to rely on acceptance by other students. Such as:
    sports
pets (does this get me on the top 50 list, BCF?)
    religious faith
maintaining strong links with those outside Uni who you REALLY trust as a life mentor (esp. trusted relatives – hopefully parents come into this)
try to have social/carer work as a part of your routine
membership of an out-of-Uni society which interests you – geology, macramé, astronomy.

My sons are only in grades 5 and 7, so they are not thinking too much about careers yet, but if ever the topic comes up I push the idea of having their own businesses rather than a job working for someone else.

Alan and you, CM, raise god points, As a unversiity professor, my view is that ultra-left-fascism dominates much if university life (campus poliics, professors’ unions, faculties of arts and social sciences). While it is true that people can set up the own businesses it would not hurt to have either community college training or business school training.

The trick is to avoid the left-wing slop as much a possible. Thus entails joining conservative groups, avoiding left-wing profesors and courses, etc. There are Internet sies that warn student of idiot professors.

And I disagree wth the sweeping statement, like Cat says, like “keep your children away from university”. In six weeks I am off to Mt. Sinai hospital in Toronto for life-saving surgery by Dr. Jay Wunder. He is the leading sarcoma researcher in Canada, and teaches at the University of Toronto. Are we to blieve that he and his staff are no good? Am I supposed to avoid his sarcoma cancer unit?

        • I sincerely hope that you have the best possible outcome. In my thoughts, buddy! Have courage.
