The Curious Case of Mexican Unemployment

Mexican unemployment rate came in at 4.2 percent in January of 2016 from 4 percent in the previous two months while staying below market expectations of 4.4 percent. A year earlier, the jobless rate was slightly higher at 4.5 percent.

In the the first month of the year, 22.5 percent of the unemployed had not completed secondary education, while the highest level of education accounted to 77.5 percent. The figures for the situation of underemployment rates were 40.7 percent and 59.2 percent, respectively. The jobless rate for women went down by 0.3 p.p. to 4.2 percent and for men it fell by 0.4 p.p. to 4.2 percent.
The labour force participation rate went up to 59.1 percent from 58.9 percent in the previous month. The employed population reached 95.8 percent of the economically active population (up from 95.5 percent in December).

It’s half of the United States’ rate. Then why are their immigrants still coming, if not for the jobs?

The short answer is: It’s for the under the table paychecks AND the welfare, stupid!

They don’t want to come out of the shadows and pay taxes and give up their handouts. Most of them would not accept amnesty even if you gave it to them, if it also meant giving up welfare and paying taxes.

  • Holy smokes that’s better than Canada. Why don’t the Syrians line up for the Mexican economic paradise?

And then trek across the border to shop at Costco once a week where those horrible Yankees sell consumer goods and don’t outrageously tax paper products.
      Mexico is such a mess.

I’ve always assumed Mexico was some sort of mess – never having been there – but I speak to engineers from Mexico and they paint a much more positive picture. Perhaps there are good regions?

Not really, not what we would call good, they just have areas that are worse than others.
Mexican pride will never allow them to admit the obvious.
If it was that awesome, they would not be living or working here.
