Trump vs. Sanders?

MANCHESTER, N.H.—There is no ignoring it now, the American electorate’s disregard for establishment politicians promising incremental change. If the country’s fatigue with the prospect of a Clinton-Bush presidential matchup has hovered above this 2016 race like a latent current of electricity, Tuesday’s New Hampshire results were the long-awaited lightning strike.

Now, in a turn stunning for no one beyond Washington’s political and media elites, America faces the real possibility that Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders could actually battle for the White House in November.

  • The media cannot get over Trump.

One pundit after the next has some derogatory comment about him.

    Too bad media.

The people are speaking. It is your job to report the news.

  • Brett_McS

I presume that Trump supporters would think that an easy win, but there is a problem: Trump’s negatives are very high, especially with women, and regarding the female vote the media can be guaranteed to make full use of the vast amount of material (mostly Trump’s own words) that could be used to play up that perception and paint Trump as very “anti-woman” indeed. I suspect the anticipation of that is partly why the media seem so happy with Trump now: they think they can take him when it comes to the real contest.

    • V10_Rob

Nothing they’ve thrown at him so far has done much damage. I doubt they have the even dirtier mud to sling being held in reserve; by their very nature, they aren’t capable of much impulse control and self-denial.

      • Brett_McS

Not with the Republican voters, no. It is the general voter that the media will target.

        • Clausewitz

Hillarie’s negatives put Trump’s to shame. If the US votes for a serial felon, then they deserve their destruction. Sanders will never make it across the finish line, either politically or physically. In the end the Democrats will make sure he is a dead man walking.

    • Drunk_by_Noon

If Trump’s “negatives” were REALLY that high, he would be toast already.
Jeb has better negative numbers, but will be lucky to invited to the next debate.

I think that whole “negatives” narrative is crap.

      • Brett_McS

No, his negatives with the general population are the issue, not with the Republican voters, which are all that has been tested to date.

        • Drunk_by_Noon

I bet his negatives are better than Hillary’s and he has more credibility than Bernie Sanders.
I think the whole negatives thang was crap spewed by the Jeb Bush camp that just get repeated by hacks like Krauthammer, as to why Trump can’t be President.

I want a wall with Mexico and fewer immigrants, if he can do that, I don’t care if he’s a cannibal rapist.

        • dance…dancetotheradio

Wiki say New Hampshire was a partly open primary.
Meaning that undeclared voters could vote for a candidate from either party.

          • mauser 98

            ‘believe that is for Dems

        • Clausewitz

Then why is he attracting so many of the magic independents to his campaign. He’s also picking up numbers of Hispanics and blacks, the holly grail that the GOP mainstream is always trying to attract?

    • Pinko, commie, Bernie or “Make America Great Again” Trump.

That’s all the public will remember.

  • It is far too early to predict who’ll get the nomination in either party, let alone who’ll get elected. Expect the unexpected – as has always been the case in US presidential elections.

    • Exile1981

I’m waiting for the assasinations and fatal accidents.

      • Brett_McS

Bernie needs to vet his security team. Otherwise I see a “heart attack” in his near future.

        • Justin St.Denis

Very salient point. The Clintons don’t fuck around….the trail of cadavers in their wake has been well documented.

        • Clausewitz

If Bernie continues to pick up states, all I can see is a dead man walking. Suicide by shooting himself 15 times in the back.

      • Justin St.Denis

Canada could use a few of those…

  • Surele Surele

Sanders scares the hell out of me.

    • He’ll never get to the WH, don’t worry.

      • Surele Surele

I hope so. From your lips…

  • Norman_In_New_York

Trump and Sanders have succeeded so far because like them or not, no matter how flawed, they are the real deal, while Hillary and many of the Republican pretenders come off as scripted stage actors. Trump’s negatives? He’s barely begun to take on the Democrats. And, he reports that his campaign spending so far is $45 million under budget.

  • Clausewitz

Sanders believes in equality for the sake of equality, and mostlly the equality of outcome, not opportunity. In the end since he can’t make everybody rich, he’ll settle for dragging everyone down into poverty.
