Led Zeppelin Rock Gods Deposed in Stairway to Heaven Lawsuit

The surviving members of Led Zeppelin have all been questioned in a lawsuit that alleges their hit Stairway to Heaven was filched from an obscure song by the band Spirit. Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant were each deposed separately over the past month as part of pretrial discovery in the copyright infringement case, new filings in Los Angeles federal court show.

Hmmm… decide for yourself here.

Next they’ll want money from Ford for naming one of their cars the Taurus.

Well, that is a WHOLE lot nearer to a rip than the “Down Under” debacle.

      See here (via Wiki):

A successful action by the putative copyright owners.

I tend to think that Stairway is demonstrably a rip.

Not even close, Taurus is a fairly ordinary piece of music, which got all the attention it deserved. Stairway is a great song, not the best of LZ, it also suffered from over exposure.

      Agree entirely.

Apparently the song really does remain the same.

What a tired old issue this is.

Regardless the outcome, only Jimmy Page might actually suffer from this.

Robert Plant – though he looks older than G-d – is that most amazing specimen – the former rock icon who never embarrassed himself by putting out crappy solo schlock after his heyday. I own Plant’s entire solo catalog, and his former band is such a SMALL part of his legacy.

This won’t even TOUCH Plant, but makes Page look bad.

Randy California has been griping about this for decades. While there are similarities with the opening guitar part of StH, over 90% of the rest of the song is completely different. Perhaps JP was inspired by Spirit, but if so, he improved that one lick so much he turned it into magic, then went off in a completely different direction. I arranged StH for solo classical guitar – and have played it for about forty years – so I actually do know what I’m talking about. This suit is frivolous.
