hebdo cover

There’s nothing courageous about Charlie Hebdo’s anniversary cover

The new Charlie Hebdo cover is feeble. God with a machine-gun, looking over his shoulder, and the line ‘The Assassin is still at large’. It makes Richard Dawkins look nuanced. Religion is to blame? All religion? It feels dishonest, timid: a refusal to face the fact that it’s a particular form of religion that is the problem.

In fact satire in general is pretty feeble, when it comes to religion and terrorism. Satire is good at attacking established power, and religious terrorism is obviously an intensely marginal thing – far more marginal than satire itself. There is a wider target: Islam in general, but in the West this too is more marginal than satire. So it suits satirists to see religion in general as the problem: it can then seem like they are bravely attacking something strong.

Satire is the canary in the coal mine, and the ones in France and elsewhere in the west just died. That should be a sign for action.

  • Shebel

    Shit- just never quit

  • If they had drawn a picture of Allah, the Muslim moon-god, that would have been courageous.

    • Shebel

No . It would not have been.

    • Brett_McS

      Like this?

      • Yeah, Islam is demonic evil unleashed.

I gotts to read this again. I know that it is over my head. It is bloody deep.

I gotta go to bed-before I make a fool of myself.

  • Shebel

I get it. Satirists are a bunch of feeble minded pussies because they find it to be easier to lump all Religions as One— So they can always state that they are in Attack mode–

  • There’s another, important aspect to this, worth mentioning. Here, Charlie Hebdo effectively equates the God of Judaism and Christianity with the god of Islam. By lumping the two together, they create or perpetuate in the popular mind the canard that Allah is merely the Arab version of God.

This idea is not merely mistaken identity on the part of Muslims, it is identity theft. By this means, the Muslims were able to give themselves legitimacy and importance, pretending to be a continuation and fruition of the two preceding religions. In the same spirit, they claimed to be genetic descendants of Abraham through Ishmael, and they invented the story of Ishmael instead of Isaac being almost sacrificed by Abraham. Similarly, Mohamed is presented as a prophet.

Thus, Charlie Hebdo are in fact acting as propagandists for Islam, and not at all as opponents (as they flatter themselves to think). Just like all leftist media, they are allies of Islam. They are dhimmis.

Furthermore ‘god’ didn’t kill the people at C.H. or the kosher market. Those murders were committed by the adepts of a well known, clearly defined hyper-violent form of theocratic fascism, the lampooning of which will get one killed.

To judge from its first anniversary cover, Charlie Hebdo is now safely sharia-compliant.

    • They have done a horrid disservice and frankly have betrayed their colleagues.

      • Etobicoke_Gladiator

Indeed, you are right. They also didn’t to meet the fate of Theo Van Gogh or live with 24/7 protection like Geert Wilders, etc. etc. etc.

    • Etobicoke_Gladiator

The origin of Islam is of course a classic case of opportunistic plagiarism. The God of Islam, “Allah”, is very obviously not the God of the Torah and the Bible. Leftists and atheists, however, just don’t get it.

      • I saw an interview with the Charlie Hebdo director on TV (he was a survivor of the shooting last year). He was asked if he is toning down criticism of Islam or Muslims, and funnily enough he claimed to be unaffected by threats. This is obviously self-delusion on his part, as the issue of the magazine does not contain one mention of Islam or Muslims but instead attacks God and religion (not Allah or Mohamed or the Koran, note well). He is an atheist, ok, but here his duty was to say out loud which religion ad which god had caused the death of his comrades.

Breaking News – Man killed attempting attack in Paris while wearing suicide bomb vest was shouting “Allah Snackbar”

    • Soon Europe will experience daily stabbing, suicide bombing, car-ramming, shooting attacks. That’s the favorite pastime of Muslims, and there plenty enough of them around.

    • Gee I sure hope he isn’t a Muslim!

If Charlie Hebdo were courageous, there would be another Muhammad cover.
