Earthquake in Victoria, BC

My 4-story condo building shook noticeably. Word is that it was a 4.8, centred 23 miles north of Victoria.

It wasn’t as bad as the one in 2000 (that was centred in south of Seattlr).

    Info. easily available via Google.
Personally, I would go along with the USGS.

  • In Central America a 4.8 is a mere tremor (tremolo). You pretty much have get above 6.0 to get anybody’s attention. Earthquake = “Terramoto”, earth mover!

Yes, we don’t seem to get as many as other places on Pacific Ring of Fire. But that’s not necessarily good. It means that stresses are building up with frequent small releases.

I can remember a proposal to “unzip” faults by pumping water into one section to lubricate and release it, while pumping water out of adjacent sections to lock them. Thie idea was to have a series of small quakes along the fault rather than one big one. It didn’t get US government support because insurance companies would sue the government for any damage from the deliberately caused quakes.

If it’s run by a government agency, prepare to see it be fucked up big time.

If you are not used to earthquakes, they all feel huge.

    • It depends on the building construction — if you live in the “barrio” with adobe brick a mere 5’er can kill you — those big adobe bricks turn to dust and walls and roof come crashing down. Steel-reinforced concrete isn’t vulnerable until 7.0 and above. I was in Costa Rica for something in the 8.0 range (early ’90’s), but about 100 miles from the epicenter which was in a little village called Cahuita. I got a couple long cracks in the walls, and a concrete ceiling beam partially collapsed and that was about it. But lots of people in Cahuita died — adobe and wood. Interestingly, when we did the repairs on the beam we discovered that it collapsed precisely at the point where there was no steel reinforcement. The builders fudged on the construction — they must have run out of re-bar and figured “it’s just a couple feet short, why bother ordering in more re-bar just for a couple feet”. But It made all the difference in the world!

Remember the quake in Bam, Iran? The mud brick houses collapsed, there was a high death toll.

        Interesting about the rebar.

        • Traditional construction adobe or mud-brick is so much more comfortable in the tropics compared to concrete block. Cooler in the hot weather, warmer in the cool weather. But with a major earthquake you could be a goner.

    • Frau Katze

i prefer not to think about it. What can you do, after all?

      • Drunk_by_Noon

Riding it out is the only thing you can do, but that knowledge does nothing to stem the urge to flee, and it gets even worse when you have to dig your two kids out of the house in pitch blackness because of the power failure. The contents of the hall closets emptied and the closet doors were jammed open by the contents of the closets. I had to reach down around the back of the door and remove everything by hand before we could proceed. I had to do that twice.
I carried the kids across the kitchen thinking I was walking across spilled cornflakes but was actually busted glass.
That took about a half an hour.
Wife was at work. She had to be dug out of the makeup aisle so we both met outside the house at about the same time.
That was an interesting time, but easily the scariest quake I have ever been through. You could not even stand until it was almost all over.

          That’s terrible!

Mein Frau: haven’t seen you as much around here lately – hope all is well. You are missed.

    • Frau Katze

I’ve got Islamonausea. Seriously, I find the situation too depressing to read about anymore. It’s a slow motion disaster and the bad guys are clearly winning. Nothing I can do makes an iota of difference. I’m trying not to think about it anymore. One feels so helpless.

      • Drunk_by_Noon

Trump will make it all better, or kill us all!
        Just you watch Katz!
I’m uncertain, but willing to roll the dice on that one anyway.
One way or another, things will change significantly in another year or so.
