Fundamentalist students shouted down the speaker!

Oops. No, it is the progressive (“liberal”) students who do that:

But colleges and universities remain largely no-go territory for those who disagree with prevailing campus opinions. A notable exception is Liberty University, founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, whose mostly conservative students in great numbers listened politely and attentively to a speech by presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. It was quite a contrast with places like Harvard. More.

Not hard to see what is at work here. Fundamentalist students believe that they must learn something and be useful. Progressive students are Big Government bureaucracy in training.

Free speech just makes sense, from the practical standpoint of wanting a society to thrive. As Mark Steyn says “a culture that can’t bear a dissenting word on race or religion or gender fluidity or carbon offsets is a society that will cease to innovate, and then stagnate, and then decline, very fast.”

Additionally, one tends to run into a tiny little problem when trying to police/silence hate speech, whether on campus or in society at large: sooner or later someone is going to decide that what YOU are saying (or trying to say) is hate speech – and shut you down as well.

In a truly free and liberal democracy there should be no such thing as “hate speech” or “hate crimes”. Free speech means just what it says, which does not include inciting murder and violence which is already a criminal offence. Yet those who do, are given a green light.
