Who’s Responsible? Does racism make people fear young black men on the street?

Hillary Clinton told a mixed audience, “I mean, if we’re honest, for a lot of well-meaning, open-minded white people, the sight of a young black man in a hoodie still evokes a twinge of fear” (http://tinyurl.com/ojxsrhm). Before we get into the nuts and bolts of that observation, I’d like to ask a question. Would well-meaning, open-minded white people have a similar fear at the sight of an elderly black man using a walker and wearing a hoodie?

Whether we like it or not, easily observed physical characteristics — such as race, sex, height and age — convey information. That’s because there is often a correlation between those characteristics and other characteristics not so easily observed.

every group has criminality in it
but the gangs seem to take on different parts of the criminal job markets
Criminals gangs pick on the group which has a particular weakness for their Shock Troops …sometimes it is Black youth some times it is Sikh youth some times it is white youth
Police go after the Shock Troops because that is the group taking pot shots on the streets

..”every group has criminality in it”…bullshit.

there are only a small number of cultures that glorify aggression ;black hood culture and muslims are a couple that make headlines daily. Show me the daily outrages by sikh or white gangs. it doesn’t exist.

Or Jewish gangs or Christian gangs.

“There is nothing more painful to me … than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.”
    – Jesse Jackson

    • Alain

Exactly! Even law-abiding blacks know to fear groups of young black men on the streets.

      • AmicusC

I wonder when we will be able to speak openly about the potential causes of this. there was a significantly more racist time to be alive where young black men weren’t violent hoodlums. then the left decided to destroy black families and here we are.
most studies that account for single parenthood find there is a negligible difference between the white and black crime rates. who would have thought that family as the foundation to civilization weren’t just buzz words.

      • Also Jesse Jackson.

  • Thinking From First Principles

I will apologize up front that this is a lengthy comment, and hope to make it worth your while.
Vision is the primary sense in all sighted animals. The importance of visual information is established by how close the eyes are located to the brain, the size of the nerves connecting the two, and the amount of energy used in processing the images (It is reported that you get 80% of the rest you would from sleeping just by closing your eyes without sleeping …).
Under daylight conditions in clear weather, the eyes can see an object at much further distance than it can be heard, smelled, tasted, or felt. Thus the eye is our longest range sensor and our earliest warning of danger.
What is at issue here is that every sighted creature on the planet is optimized for visual recognition of danger. Whether you attribute it to design at creation or to optimization by evolutionary pressures, vision is what we and every other sighted species rely on the most in determining danger.
Key Point: It is absurd to expect humans, as sighted animals, to not rely on visual cues in assessing danger. It’s not racist – it’s central to our nature as sighted animals.
As such, what becomes a point of contention is the programming of our brains – our human neural network processors – for that recognition task. And this can be studied scientifically. Collect representative news reports, images from news reports, TV shows, relevant statistical information on crime rates, etc. as training data for a computer-based visual neural network processor. Then run it against a set of images of individuals of different skin colors, genders, and dress codes to see what danger rules it had evolved to implement. The computer-based visual neural network is, by definition, incapable of racism. Run the experiment and see if it develops a set of rules similar to those described in the article.

Why can’t you just keep it simple ?
      And tell the truth.

I’m terrified of an old white woman who uses a walker becoming the U.S. president!

  • Jesse Jackson is quoted as saying “There is nothing more painful to me … than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery. Then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.”

Jesse Jackson knows the obvious – young black men are a bigger threat to his safety than white young men.

The problem is not a racist white population. The problem is, a black young male population, that is involved in crime at significantly higher numbers that other population groups.

It is not racist for Jesse to make the obvious true observation.

Why is it racist for any non-black person to make the same true observation.

Liberals ignore this fact because it allows them to play to race card towards anyone stating non-PC truths.

The real victims here are other blacks.

Violent young black males murder 90% of all black murder victims.

And blacks murder whites at twice the rate as whites murder blacks.

The PC narrative of white racists murdering peaceful blacks at random is simply fantasy.

The problem of young black violent thugs is a big problem. And it will continue to be one as long as we continue to use honkies as an excuse from addressing the reality.

    • ntt1

virtually the same story with Canadian Indians . With their enforced collective villages and soul destroying handouts. their youth has even embraced the violent hate filled rap culture.

  • Shebel

Common sense and a wish for self – preservation makes most people afraid of a group of Black youth on da street.

  • Drunk_by_Noon

What if “racism” (as it’s described by the left) isn’t even real?
What if it’s a made up construct designed to preempt the will to resist your reshuffling to the bottom of the deck to make room for a more politically reliable class.
You must be held down, but you can only be oppressed if you consent.
What better way to force your consent than to criminalize the very thoughts that could set you free?
Does anyone find it odd that the most grevious social offense today is to be called a “racist”, and the mere threat of that accusation is enough to silence almost everyone?
    I find that odd.

    • moraywatson

You have no life, unless the government says so. Your self preservation is no longer any of your business. (Make mine a double.)

  • Hard Little Machine

to a lot of liberals an orthodox Jew is evocative of wanting to murder them.

    • Shebel

      Do they?

      • Hard Little Machine

the only people who ever spat on me were Muslims and upper middle class liberals.

  • David

    No, common sense does.

  • Shebel

Is an Orthodox Jew comparable a Radical Islamist or to a Christian Evangelist ?
Or are they ALL the same?

    • Alain

Are you serious? If so then ask yourself if you feel in danger from Orthodox Jews or Christian Evangelists. Are they imposing their ways and beliefs on you? Do they threaten to kill you if you do not convert? Are they bombing, raping and killing non believers across the globe on a daily basis?

      • I agree.

It’s nothing but leftist cultural relativist BS.

  • moraywatson

Our senses plus our experiences are relied upon for self-preservation. Ignore them at your peril.

  • Xavier

Stereotypes exist for a reason – that they’re usually accurate.

  • Xavier

“twinge of fear”? More like opportunity! Look ’em straight in the eye and keep one hand on your weapon.

  • Norman_In_New_York

The big problem here is that in doling out benefits, government rules favor broken homes and dysfunctional families over intact families who may be going through hard times. Our crime nightmares are a bureaucrat’s heaven.

  • canminuteman

No, young blacks make people fear them on the street. The only time in my life when I was beaten to a pulp for no reason whatsoever and woke out of a coma in hospital a week later, the perpetrator was a Young Black, probably on his way to church.
