Blind by desire

Woman who wanted to be blind had DRAIN CLEANER poured in her eyes by a sympathetic psychologist

A woman who dreamed of being blind arranged to have drain cleaner poured in her eyes to fulfil her wishes.

Jewel Shuping, 30, from North Carolina has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition in which able-bodied people believe they are meant to be disabled.

Her desire to lose her sight was so strong that she decided to blind herself – by having a sympathetic psychologist pour drain cleaner into her eyes.

Telling her shocking story, Ms Shuping said her fascination with blindness began early in childhood.

The sympathetic psychologist should lose his license.

    • It’s sick stuff.

      • Rick McGinnis

Is there even a licensing body for psychologists?

    • I’d go a bit farther than that.

      • David Murrell

Point taken. There should be a charge for some sort of first-degree assault, or something like that.

You beat me to it. But a defence lawyer will argue that we castrate the “transgendered”, and that there really is no difference, and they’d be right.

I believe the argument against things like MMA and bare knuckle boxing was that they constituted assault and that you can’t physically assault someone even if they agree to it. I don’t know how that train of thought justifies sports like boxing and real wrestling, but it is what it is.

It certainly opens up a whole ethical can o’ worms.

Men desire greatness and there is no greatness without battle. Combat is the most natural and purest expression of this. I don’t see how you can conflate thinking one should be blind and accomplish this artificially with something that comes as naturally as breathing. One is a surrendering to the delusions of there own vanity and the other is a celebration of strength.

        • canminuteman

I don’t understand what you are getting at here. Besides, I never said I thought there was anything wrong with boxing or MMA, I just stated what society had to say about it.

          • Jabberwokk

Oh? Whose society? How was that decided?

In any case I’m protesting a false equivalency. If your not positing it don’t worry about it. 😛

          • canminuteman

I’ll try to explain my point again, as I don’t think people are getting it. What the psychologist did to his patient is assault. If you poured bleach in someone’s eyes on the street, you would be charged with assault. BUT doctors perform sex change operations on people who are “transgendered” because that is the accepted treatment and society considers it normal. Gouging someone’s eyes out because they thing they are trapped in the body of a blind person is no different, its a treatment for body dimorphism by altering a persons body to what they think it should be.

So point one, was that ethically speaking, gouging someone’s eyes out if they think they should be blind is no different than lopping someone’s balls of if they think they should be a woman. But society says one is horrible and the other is just A OK.

Point two. In the past human blood sports were illegal. The logic behind them being illegal was that they constitute assault and assault is illegal even if you agree to let someone assault you. I am not saying I agree with this. If you want to agree to have someone kick the living shit out of you, fill yer boots. Hell, I sword fight for fun, and that could be construed to be at least a little bit alike, but since we use blunt swords we keep amputations to a minimum. I then tried to juxtapose this situation, unsuccessfully by the looks of it, with someone agreeing to have someone pour acid in their eyes. If you cannot agree to be assaulted in a bareknuckle boxing match for money, you cannot agree to have someone pour acid in your eyes. If one is assault then the other is also.

But, if you can now agree to be crippled in an MMA match it seams logical that you can also agree to have someone gouge your eyes out. We would probably consider someone who wanted to have their eyes gouged out in need of commitment to a psychiatric facility for their own protection, but people who are prepared to be killed or permanently maimed in a sporting event perfectly sane.

I see. That sort of clears it up. I agree with your first two paragraphs for sure. I guess where it falls apart for me is where your saying fighting in MMA and willingly allowing yourself to be blind are more or less the same(your personal approval aside). Can’t say I know any fighter in MMA, Boxing, or traditional Martial arts that come there saying “Please someone blind me, I just feel the need to have a leg broken”. Generally speaking it’s “I want to be able to defend myself” or “I need a way to deal with my aggression”. Injury is certainly a possibility but it is not a certainty and absolutely not the objective. Injuries as such as you describe happen in other sports from Football to horse jumping. If I re-read your paragraph and replaced the MMA/Boxing nouns with say Hockey ones it wouldn’t really make sense to say its as justifiable as pouring acid in ones eyes. When it comes down to it two people agree to fight not two people agree to get injured. It is a risk there willing to accept but the risk is not the goal. The goal is to win. When you agree to get blinded the risk of blindness is the goal. It’s a question of purpose.

Also I would contest a few things. Mostly minor tiffs.

1:) The logic behind blood sports was not that it was assault. It was profiteering off of cruelty and the preservation of human dignity. We’re not talking boxing . Were talking the Roman games. It became big business to have gladiators/slaves fight to the death re-enacting storied battles. And the problem was that you always needed more slaves to die, so you start looking for ways to turn men into slaves. Assault at least in Canada means any unwanted physical contact(to broad and vague a definition for my liking.) If two people agree to fight there wanting physical contact. I say go for it. In a ring(or cage or mat) with gloves and a referee.

and 2:)Some people conflate and contact sport to blood sport. They should remember that the original Olympics contained Boxing, wrestling, and Pankration(essentially MMA). MMA isn’t some new sport to slake blood thirst. It’s the oldest and original one.

            Your points fail.

So point one, was that ethically speaking, gouging someone’s eyes out if they think they should be blind is no different than lopping someone’s balls of if they think they should be a woman.

Blindness is a crippling disability. Having no balls is less of a disability than a pathway to promotion today.

Point two. … If you cannot agree to be assaulted in a bareknuckle boxing match for money, you cannot agree to have someone pour acid in your eyes. If one is assault then the other is also.

First instance is an activity involving risk of injury. Second instance is a planned procedure with a certain intended result of maiming. There’s a difference there. It’s not small.

      • El Martyachi

And that argument has failed because there’s still MMA.

As long as the public doesn’t pay for her disability, I don’t care what she does. But the psychologist should be blinded and jailed.

While it’s manifestly obvious that the human race has had its psycho/spiritual defectives throughout history, it seems that the professionals who formerly labored to restore psycho/spiritual health to the afflicted are now collaborating with them in their madness. Here we have a psychologist allegedly assisting this madwoman in her pathology. Elsewhere we have surgeons in collaboration with psychiatrists “reassigning” gender. And in other places we have churchmen and law makers determining that to say marriage is between one man and one woman, to the exclusion of all others, is unlawful and mean.

All of these actions work to tear down civilization and are therefore hardly to be celebrated but are to be abhorred. And they all follow from an initial outrage: The arrogant belief that because I merely want something that I am therefore entitled to it.

It is no act of charity to confirm and support those who are psycho/spiritually sick in their illness. On the contrary, such collaboration serves only to spread illness.

If a woman wants to pay someone to have here eyes put out, who are we to stop her?

Actually transgendered used to be considered a form of BIID; then it was normalized and there is actual debate these days over the idea that all other forms of BIID should be normalized. If they do then I guess Goat/Butterfly could get a set of government funded wings.

Of course “OtherKin” used to be a form of BIID; now it’s becoming mainstream.

Actually a sympathetic psychologist would have had her committed. Instead she found one as demented as herself.

This is exactly the kind of thing all this “self-identifying” bullshit leads to. Hopefully in the not too distant future it will be tossed into the slag heap of discredited bullshit along with other claptrap like “satanic ritual abuse”, and “recovered memory syndrome” that the masses once fell for.
