Yes, it certainly was a myth. Of course there was a resistance movement, but after the war I doubt I ever met a Frenchman who didn’t claim to have part. It was rather like all Germans claiming they had never been Nazis nor supporters of the Nazis.

My wife’s father was a member of the Danish Resistance, he was a ship’s carpenter by trade and used his skills to help build a false roof on top to the apartment building when he lived. That was where they hide their weapons. It was less than a foot higher than the original roof and was never discovered.

Most French in the war were too busy scrounging up food. The Germans took all the foodstuffs they could and sent them to Germany. French people for the most part starved during the war.

There were also plenty of French people who took possession of the homes, apartments and businesses of the French Jews who had been rounded up even prior to the Nazis request. It was actually the French peasants, you know the non elite, who risked their lives to hide French Jews, while the elite were even more anti-Semitic than the Germans at the time.

The most active resistance cells in French cities were usually run by communists or demobbed army officers and collecting useful intelligence was an important priority.
SOE and similar outfits in London sponsored and supplied a lot of them.

DeGaulle got things organized after the Germans left France. One of the first things he did was to ban from all government jobs anyone who had ever engaged in any resistance work supported by “foreign intelligence services” without having his direct approval.
He really should have been a Hapsburg.

    Frenchmen invented faggotry.

Sorry but I find no basis for that. I heard that also from a Russian teacher who had escaped the Soviet Union to come to Canada. I disagreed with her also on this point. Not claiming France was immune to homosexuality but it was no more accepted than anywhere else and certainly not the norm.

    • Lots of faggots in Britain too.

Howard Stern takes extreme pleasure in reminding every French person he meets that France was the only Nazi occupied country that actually stepped up productivity when under occupation.

That would not surprise me knowing what I do of French unions.

  • Yeah, the Muslims can and will knock over most EU governments – there is no will in their leaderships, they are as good as dead (their heads cut off by the Muslim friends).

It’s about time some historian wrote a book about this. I always wondered why a country that could be wrapped up militarily in six weeks would suddenly become this ferocious tiger AFTER it was defeated. It didn’t make sense.

Unfortunately the same would happen in Canada. If Canada were ever invaded (or more likely,) be taken over by a dictatorial government, Canadians would do nothing but bitch and most would actively support it.
