“When The Ethics Alarms Don’t Sound” Files: Auschwitz

Israeli tourists who arrived at the Auschwitz death camp in Poland on Sunday expressed shock and outrage over what appeared to be the placement of showers near the entrance to the site.

h/t DR and all others who sent this in!

  • formwiz

Apparently it’s quite hot there and the showers are to let people cool off.

    Sometimes you just can’t win.

    • FactsWillOut

Perhaps they got used to the heat in the ovens?

    • David

Not when it comes to 6 million men, women and children murdered because they were Jews.

      • FactsWillOut

Yes, in your little mind, misters to cool of customers = murder.
Some little old lady dead of heat stroke or heart attack is a small price to pay to keep the likes of you from being offended, eh?

From what I’ve seen (photos), Auschwitz is a Disneyland today. There’s even a hotdog concession on the grounds. What happened here and at the other death camps is so unimaginable, that I suppose the Disneyfication of the horrors that occurred could be considered a valid response.

Sadly, we have become inured to violent and horrific death. The play-acting on video games and in movies has not helped. When daily, we are assaulted with real life images of the horrific slaughters being carried out by ISIS and Boko Harum, the tastelessness of showers at Auschwitz seems rather mundane.

    • lolwut?

Years ago there was a huge blowup when they started selling HO scale Cattle cars.

Never saw any photo or video evidence of this, bus supposably they were

  • FactsWillOut

Look, another aggrieved group screaming victimhood!

    • David

Kill babies, hate Jews, you got it all.

      • FactsWillOut

Seems you are adept at the skill of blood libel.

  • simus1

Birkenau was the extermination facility loosely associated with Auschwitz.
In the sense that if you were first selected for Auschwitz and almost worked to death on schedule, Birkenau got you as planned.

  • WalterBannon

I think people should worry more about their left wing govts who are importing Nazi Muslims by the thousands and also the impact of all the PC triggering nonsense on our ability to speak truth about this threat to our life.

  • David

Some things are just beyond the pale but some of the commenters here are good with beyond the pale.

    • FactsWillOut

Go nurse your little wounded ego with the rest of the PC crowd.

    • Justin St.Denis

many contemporary males play at being alpha males online, ergo they apparently buy-into the idea that a lack of any sensitivity is very alpha. It is not, as you likely know. Anyone who has ever seen/dealt with IDF know this firsthand; indeed, anyone with any military background knows this.

This was a serious and insensitive misstep by the administration which runs this memorial site. Your anger is understandable.

  • tom_billesley

Do they have striped pyjamas and yellow badges in the gift shop?

  • Drunk_by_Noon

First of all, they are water-misters and NOT showers.
They are used all over the American Southwest to keep people from keeling over from heatstroke.
Second, why are you looking for things to get offended over?

What other same cost solution would you propose?

  • Bataviawillem

I’am pretty sure they where placed with the best intention, but it looks horrible in light of what happened there.
Tip, place the hose underground and put the nozzles in fans.

  • Minicapt

Or is this another media-generated shit-storm?

  • Clausewitz

I thought Germany was supposed to be a world leader in optics. Ohhhhhh, not those optics.

    • Justin St.Denis

Precisely. Commenter David did not address this directly. Perhaps he should have. I know Germany and Germans very well. I have huge problems swallowing the idea that this was a “misstep”. I wonder if German “affirmative action” initiative have placed muslims in positions where they can genuinely harm Germany’s image, such as the administration of Holocaust memorial sites. You never know. Progressive ideologues are vicious and crazy wherever you find them.

  • john700

People visiting Auschwitz expressed shock and outrage over these showers. So, by visiting the former concentration camp at Auschwitz they were not expecting to be shocked and outraged?

    • Justin St.Denis

So editorial clumsiness is good reason to dismiss their sentiments? Your editorial clumsiness, I might add. How clever you must think yourself!

  • Justin St.Denis

Wow. I didn’t know the new anti-Semitism had made such inroads into BCF! It really does seem to lurk just behind the veneer of the West.
