Woman who helped kill family as a child prepares for ‘real world’

A woman who was 12 when she helped murder her family because they disapproved of her relationship with an older man is preparing to live a “real life in the real world” when her sentence ends next spring.

The woman, who is now 21 but can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was convicted along with her then boyfriend of killing her mother, father and eight-year-old brother in the family’s Medicine Hat home in April, 2006.

Should someone like her be permitted to ever rejoin the “real world” and get on with her life? After all, her parents and brother are never going to do the same, thanks partly to her. On the other hand, she was only 12 at the time. I am personally of two minds about this ….

    • It’s a tough call.

It is a tough call except for the public not being warned.

Not to me. She should have been executed.

        • A 12-year-old girl? Wow. I thought only the Iranians did things like that.

          • BitterClinger

At 12 years old, did you know it was wrong to slaughter your family?

          • Yes I did. As a whatever-year-old, do you know that a little girl is not a grownup? Here’s a picture of a twelve year old girl. Put a noose around her neck. Put a needle in her arm.

If she had slaughtered her family, I would have no problem doing so.

I have always known it would have been wrong to slaughter my family with the possible exception of when I didn’t yet know what a family was.

    • Twelve years old know right from wrong.

      She just didn’t care.

Her parents and brother were part of the real world.

But wait! The fawning, apologetic Globe and Mail article does not think that the murdered victims were not in fact part of the real world. My mistake.

She should have been put to death.
12 is plenty old enough to know that you can’t murder your entire family.

I’m of the opinion that murdering your own little brother is not some thing you get over and move past.

Was she a pen pal of Bernardo?

  • Oh, goody gum drops!

And when she does something similar, no one will know it was her.

We have a legal system, not a justice system.
