Rule stymies teacher hiring in Ontario

It’s called Regulation 274 and to its harshest critics — principals and parents aware of its impact — it has been the worst thing to happen to teacher hiring in Ontario in the past three years.

The regulation — which mandates that teachers be hired for permanent jobs based strictly on seniority and not on merit — has forced principals to “interview and hire incompetent people” and “protects the weakest teachers,” according to responses obtained from a recent survey of principals undertaken by People for Merit-based Teacher Hiring, a coalition of 100 school councils.

They chose a profession run by morons who couldn’t make it in the real world.

    • Teachers unions are anti-education.

Exactly and when you get the government sharing the same bed it becomes worse. Actually from personal experience there is not a single public service union, which includes teachers’ unions, which does not protect the worst and the most incompetent.

all ya have to do is ask – Why does the teacher’s union object to charter schools and vouchers.

Sure as hell isn’t because the teachers (or the union) have the children’s best interest in mind.

        Especially in poor neighborhoods.

The rot has been in the system for a long time. Regulation 274 was just the icing on the cake. The unions have also destroyed the professionalism of registered nurses. but that’s another story for another day.k

Good for those parents who are going to pull their kids out of the public schools this fall and home-school. They might actually learn something of value, like grammar, arithmetic, a little bit of history, geography, English literature . ..

Opponents of homeschooling like to argue that public school teachers can teach your kids better than you can because they are Professional Educators. If hiring & retention were strictly merit-based, they’d have a case, but when unions arrange it so that the very worst keep making innocent children suffer in their classrooms till they retire while the best & brightest get dumped, then they have no case at all.

This must be demoralizing to the dedicated teachers out there.

I wouldn’t advise any college kid to take up teaching today b/c of its never ening parade of sj whackjobs, union thugs, dilletantes and poltroons you’ll meet working for the public schoolboards. Oh yeah I forgot the Benny Levins

  • If. You only. Knew.

I have friends and relatives who have seen this sort of favouritism and incompetence go on. It squeezes out good teachers who have worked in the system for a long time and lets in the party-line towing morons.
