America Should Aim to Contain, not Destroy, ISIS

What to do about Syria? How to defeat the Islamic State? Think of all the op-eds and policy papers that aim to provide answers to these questions. But is there actually anything to them? What about the current U.S. approach?

To begin with, one can readily agree that the U.S. train-and-equip program for Syrian rebels to fight ISIS has been misguided from the beginning. The notion that such a force can only take on ISIS and not the Assad regime has no credibility among the overwhelming majority of Syrian rebels, regardless of ideological orientation, as the fight against the two is seen as inherently intertwined. Little wonder then that the initial batch recently inserted into Syria had only 60 recruits.

I still say its better to just Glass the ME.

  • Justin St.Denis

I concluded that glassing the ME would be the only way in the end to “solve” the islamic problem a long time ago. Nothing has changed my opinion. Indeed, I am perceiving some urgency to the operation since Iran is so close to being nuclear, since Iran “goes nuclear” at the drop of a Koran/Slice of Bacon/Whatever.

From the Preamble to the constitution of the Islamic republic of Iran:

“The Assembly of Experts for Constitution…fram[ed] the Constitution…[after input] by the government…with the hope that this century will witness the establishment of a universal holy government and the downfall of all others.”

This scene from Trainspotting is what glassing is to me.
And fuck do I want a cigarette everytime I watch it.

    • Islam is just a cult. Yes it is the biggest cult ever. But it is just a cult.

Get a bunch of psychologists working on the problem and implement it.

      My idea.

Arrest all the mullahs. Close all the mosques. No Islamic garb. Equality for women. Arrest anyone who advocates violence. That will get it started.

ISIS is not the problem, it’s a symptom.

Islam plays a zero sum game, and they play for keeps.

  • And why would one want to keep ISIS in operation? The Taliban was bad. Al-Qaeda was bad. The Muslim Brotherhood was bad.

These are very good reasons to recolonise the Middle East.

    • Drunk_by_Noon

I think in that sense there are good reasons to recolonize almost the entire rest of the world, but certainly the entire Middle East.
If nothing else, at least support an unending string of pro-westren dictators. They can have ‘basic human rights’ after they have earned them, and can be trusted not to abuse the privilege.

    • Norman_In_New_York

The problem with recolonizing the region is that the colonizers would pander to the inhabitants in order to ease their burdens. It’s best to let the Shiites and the Sunnis slaughter each other while containing that slaughter to them. Once war weariness sets in, they might in their weakened state take a second look at Islam.

      • But they are never weary. That’s the problem. This could go on for another century.

What we need is a plague.

Well the west does not have the guts to glass the mideast, it is the best solution but will not happen. The next best solution would be to put all the pisslamist there and wall it off and let them exterminate themselves.

Ah, the time has come for some of Emperor Barry’s court jesters to assert “What would a gang leader from Chicago do?”
