Rebel poll on Mulcair’s dual citizenship reveals big Quebec/ROC split

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair wants to be the next prime minister of Canada — but not everyone knows he’s also a citizen of France.

That one thing should be a disqualifier right there.

  • Ron MacDonald

The Prime Minister should be only a Canadian citizen.

Just be careful about that evil Harper. Remember he controls the weather. I’m glad we have that instructor with the Ontario Studies in Education warning us about this in the Star, when she told us that he uses weather warnings to scare us.

In most of Quebec this would be a plus but not so in English Canada.

Isn’t that because a dual British-Canadian citizen still has allegiance to the Queen?
That said, even if I pursued British citizenship as is my right given my mother was born in England to an English mother four years after the war, I would renounce it if I sought the highest office in Canada.
How could I let David Cameron be my PM when I am also a PM?
(Nitpickers, I know the G-G technically has more power.)

Actually all Canadians have allegiance to the Queen, not just those with dual British-Canadian citizenship. I recall pre Trudeau era when even our passports clearly stated that we were British Subjects at the same time as being Canadian citizens.

Yes, as subjects of ER II (but not of Britain now) we can use British consulates/embassies abroad. I read once many years ago when a Canadian had gotten in trouble in some 3rd World dump (and not the recent “Canadian” journalist held by the Egyptians) that the British got him out when the Canadians couldn’t. The article/column suggested that if you’re really in the sh1t, you should ask to speak to British consulate staff and not Canadian.

And if that doesn’t work, drop by the local American embassy and give that a shot.
Odds are they will either help you directly, or tell you how to get help.
No guarantees, but there is a fair chance they will do something for you.

Well, you’re more precise than I am on this.

“Actually all Canadians have allegiance to the Queen, not just those with dual British-Canadian citizenship.”

That just sounds so alien and so strange reading that with American eyes.

          • Frances

Her Majesty is Queen of Canada, and the Governor General is her representative and head of state.

  • David Murrell

Obviously Mulcair’s media cronies will do their best to keep his French citizenship secret.

  • Brett_McS

I can’t understand why (except for Quebec) the numbers aren’t 100% yes.

Even MPs in Australia can’t have dual citizenship (which caused a kerfuffle over Greek-born MPs as the Greek government does not let them renounce their citizenship). No way in hell would a party leader and potential PM with dual citizenship be tolerated.
