Mark Karpeles, the former head of defunct bitcoin exchange MtGox, has been arrested in Japan, and is reportedly to be questioned over the 2014 disappearance of nearly $390m (£250m) worth of the virtual currency.

A spokesman for the Tokyo police said French-born Karpeles, 30, was suspected of accessing the exchange’s computer system in February 2013 and inflating his cash account by $1m.

Bitcoin is as real of a currency as currency on a video game. It is nothing more than numbers on a computer terminal. It is not backed by a valuable commodity such as gold or silver as our currency used to be and should be. It is not issued by any government or central bank. There is nothing that validates it as a form of legitimate currency. Bitcoin is as real as pixy dust and just another internet scam. Organized crime likes Bitcoin because it gives them an easy way to money launder real currency and organized crime is behind Bitcoin. We as a nation need to go back to a commodity backed (gold or silver) notes were the government issues certificates used as currency in order to prevent debt and inflation instead of the current FIAT system were the federal government or a privately operated federal reserve system can simply print as much paper or polymer as they like.
