Paul Mason’s Postcapitalism is proof that the left is out of ideas

The literary emissions of the left are hardly ever enjoyable, but they can be instructive. Last year Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the 21st Century became one of the biggest-selling political books of the year. Like a thousand-page Soviet report on tractor production, it hardly seemed intended to be read. The point of its success was that it could be said to ‘prove’ the left’s argument. They could then hit their opponents over the head with it and move to the next stage. Last year they questioned some premises of capitalism and now Paul Mason, the economics editor of Channel 4 News (and Spectator diarist), is here to say that capitalism is in fact over.

Not only are we are at the end of history, but we are at the end of economics too!
Better go reset the calendar to year 0.

We are at the end, or very close to the end of Western history and civilisation brought on by a combination of enemies within and a lack of will to survive.

The last time some Maoist dictator made that declaration, a certain Southeast Asian nation endured three years of pure hell, and was left with 1/4 of its population dead.

The name of that demented tyrant? Pol Pot.

Very good, not everyone gets my references to ‘the monsters of history’.

I teach economics at university, and the basic tenets of economics hold true today. It’s just that the hard left doesn’t like the basic truths of pro-business economics. And btw, evidence indicates that — once capitalism is allowed to flourish in an underdeveloped country — that country’s economy “takes off”. But hard-leftists deny the evidence.

As for Pol Pot, he and his communists, and the ensuing genocide, was the single most important reason I left my radical-left days, and became a conservative (this was around 1977-78 I believe). In the 2000s decade, a Commentary magazine article devoted itself to telling how leftist media tried to cover up the Cambodian genocide for years on end. Again, proof of the moral poverty of the left. As for Islamic war crimes today, the same cover-up and denial is taking place.

The Left did try to deny the Holodomor and other Soviet crimes, even as evidence of its existence was slowly leaking out despite the Soviet Union’s efforts.

The New York Times also tried to do the same thing to the Holocaust as well…

Capitalism isn’t so much an “ism” as what free people do when you leave them alone. If the communists want to go and start a commune living according to their philosophy, no one is stopping them, they just don’t have any right to slaughter those of us who don’t want any part of it.

Even the Chinese communists figured out that socialism/communism when it pertains to the market does not work. I do get sick and tired of the lie that we actually have capitalism in the West, because at best we have crony capitalism or socialist capitalism and no real free market.

      • We have a corporate welfare state subsidized by cheap labour imports otherwise known as our national immigration policy.

Are you sure you’re not thinking of islam ?
