Donald Trump: Republicans turn on tycoon as he refuses to apologise for John McCain ‘slur’

Donald Trump, the property mogul and reality TV star-turned-poll-busting political candidate, has refused to apologise to US senator John McCain for suggesting the former Republican presidential nominee was only considered a war hero because he was taken prisoner in Vietnam.

Speaking at an event in Iowa on Saturday, Mr Trump said: “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

Asked by ABC News whether he owed an apology to Mr McCain, a naval airman who was shot down over Vietnam, Mr Trump replied: “No, not at all.”

  • Norman_In_New_York

Er, Donald, when you dig yourself into a hole, stop digging.

    • Alain

Really? Sorry but they are RINOs; nothing more, nothing less.

    • Clausewitz

Well, McCain’s been riding that sacred cow for decades, maybe it’s time that someone told him that we need a man of today, not someone who’s a Rino, or more well defined a Progressive Republican. He didn’t fight for the right when he was a candidate, he’s used up “All” of his goodwill. We won’t even bring up the idiocy of his campaign finance reform.

  • Ed

And checkmate. I don’t care for McCain either, but the man was shot down in combat and captured with broken limbs. What would the blowhard suggest he should have done? Idiot. Too bad, because he was the only one taking immigration on till now.

    • David Murrell

I agree with Trump’s immigration statements. But when John McCain played nasty and called Trump’s follower’s “crazies”, Trump should have debated hi on that specific point, instead of name-calling him as to his war record. Trump should have stayed on topic, instead of making a fool of himself.

      • Yes, but it’s what he does.

        • DVult

Trump has many good qualities but he argues like a petulant child sometimes. Somebody crosses him and he hits back with any negative thing he can think of true or not. There are plenty of reasons to attack McCain without going after his war record.

          • infedel

Our marxists down here hit back whether it is” true or not”. Alinsky rules about lies rule the left. At least Trump calls them out — we Americans of tired of career politicians and lies.

  • African

Any American with common sense should elect Donal Trump. He is the only one who says what needs to be said, free from political-correctness.

    • granny47

And I admire for not bowing down and apologizing like most do when they are attacked for something they said.

      • Millie_Woods

That is rather refreshing isn’t it?

He is speaking truth, after Mccain’s disgusting run at the presidency and Mccain’s muzzling of sarah palin he should be viewed with considerable scepticism. is he a hero maybe, Is he a conservative ? not even close he did what he did to gain power and in doing so he sold out every one of his supporters/ he should retire and play golf with barry obama. as for Trump he is mining a hunger for truth among voters and should not be discounted. Particularly based on observations by the media who are even more corrupt and debased than the democrats

    • Alain

Yes, and now having checked out exactly what Trump said, he is not at fault in the least. McCain accused everyone who supports Trump of being “crazies”, so like all the other RINOs he also considers members of the Tea Party crazies. Basically any American supporting the American Constitution and its founding fathers is a crazy, an extremist and a threat.

      • ntt1

exactly, Mccain is a scoundrel wearing his POW status as a cloak.
I am not at all convinced that this will crimp Trumps flight, if this is apparent to me ,an aged hippy on the wet coast then it should be readily apparent to Trump’s new found constituency

  • Brett_McS

He didn’t actually slur McCain; he just said that he prefers those who didn’t get captured. From what I have read, McCain did have a few more problems than most pilots.

    • Alain

      You are correct.

  • Am I allowed to despise them both?

  • The__Hammer

I am in Arizona right now, have been since start of June, and I can tell you people here are pissed. This is generally a rather republican state and Trump as shot himself in the foot big time. I guess he has not noticed that respect for vets is big with Republican voters.

    • ntt1

There is a perfect example of linguistic differences between “muricans and canucks: up here in the retarded north, the land that global warming forgot, if people are pissed it means you are at a successful quarry party and its time to crank the tunes,
How do you square Mccain’s actions re Sarah Palin? he seemed to curb her instincts to go after the democrats, it made him look like a rino.

    • Brett_McS

Rambo 2 was on last night. It’s like McCain was the unseen presence instructing the CIA guy to abandon the pickup.

  • I think it was to slag McCain’s service. That said I would still vote for Trump.

keep remembering…truth is the new hate speech….go trump go…
