Evening photo: it’s a mystery

This is alleged to be in Ireland. Yet, the mountains seem far too steep. One comes across such things on Pinterest where they spread like wildfire.

Reverse image search (TinEye, oldest match) shows several travel sites linked to Ireland. Someone then cropped it for vertical and now it’s all over Pinterest.

imageThe pin I found says it’s the Mourne Mountains, from Lonely Planet.

imageNo way, here are the Mourne Mountains.

imageSome photos from Scotland look more craggy, but still not like the mystery photo. From Wikipedia.

It looks unreal, as if it was generated by a computer program. Notice how snow carefully fades, as if it were created by an algorithm.

Maybe somebody vertically stretched the photo. I’ve taken it and shrunk it vertically–see below.

    • Frau Katze

How did you do that? Plus, the snow looks painted on with a brush.

Copy of my original reply: Do you not see the craggy, bearded, curly-haired warrior profile on the right at 10:00? Clear as a bell to me. Look.

    • mobuyus

It is not even photo realistic.

  • Shebel

Amazing. The snow is fading. In my neck of the woods -We call that Spring.
    Sort of like natural rejuvenation.

Yes, it does look unreal and aren’t Irish mountains old, more like the Appalachians than newer (higher, more jagged) ranges like the Alps? Maybe I’m wrong about that – definitely no expert.

  • I agree, it looks CG.

    • Frau Katze

      ? CG ? No savvy.

      • jayme

I’ve never seen that before either, Frau, but I’ll take an educated guess that it stands for Computer Generated.

        • Frau Katze

Thanks! I worked on computers for decades but never with images.

      • Computer generated.

    • Exile1981

The wife who does CG for her side job says she agrees that it looks CG. There are some really good CG software packages out there in the individual price range…and then there are the professional ones and above that the military and gov;t stuff

  • Shebel

    I know naut about photography.

  • Maggat

Sorry Al Gore, wouldn’t have anything to do with snow.

Cg here is one I did years ago with a program called terragen

Mourne Mountains? Absolute bulldust. I’ve walked most, if not all of the mountains and there’s absolutely nothing like these pictures. They’re steep but the highest is just 3045 feet.
