2067: the end of British Christianity

Projections aren’t predictions. But there’s no denying that churches are in deep trouble

It’s often said that Britain’s church congregations are shrinking, but that doesn’t come close to expressing the scale of the disaster now facing Christianity in this country. Every ten years the census spells out the situation in detail: between 2001 and 2011 the number of Christians born in Britain fell by 5.3 million — about 10,000 a week. If that rate of decline continues, the mission of St Augustine to the English, together with that of the Irish saints to the Scots, will come to an end in 2067.

That is the year in which the Christians who have inherited the faith of their British ancestors will become statistically invisible. Parish churches everywhere will have been adapted for secular use, demolished or abandoned.

  • The withering away of Christianity in Britain has been going on for some time. It has reached peak crisis point.

I would suggest that instead of making Anglicanism “cool”, one made it spiritually relevant, if that is possible.

        Complicit, possibly instigators.

      • There is an official state religion in Britain.

Don’t worry most of those churches will be converted to mosques and “Islamic Peace Centers”

    • P_F

      Several have already been converted.

  • Hard Little Machine

    They’ll rebrand as Protestant Islamoanglicanism.

  • And this is… bad?

    • mobuyus

      • Why?

        • Clink9

We would never be able to get you to understand.

          • Religious belief: faith in imaginary things. But I suspect you are wrong about me not being able to understand your views, I just doubt you could get me to agree with them.

          • DMB

It’s better to have a peaceful belief system that allows people the freedom to choose to participate in than a violent one that mandates people to participate in.

          • And this is why your argument has collapsed. If militant atheists had proof positive of their disbelief, it would have long been presented.

You also don’t get that countries founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs last and are stable.

            How “imaginary” is that?

          • That would be like demanding I prove the non-existance of the Magic Pixies that make the world turn. Well I cannot prove Magic Pixies do not exist.

Moreover the most stable nation in history was ancient Egypt. But hey, I suppose Ra and Anubis might be real too.

          • Please continue talking like this. It only cements the faith of believers.

This is why no one believes militant atheists like you are smart. You’re not clever rhetoricians; you’re smug motormouths who enjoy their own flatulence, verbal and otherwise.

        • mobuyus

Your death cult would fill the vacuum.

          • What death cult is that?

          • The Phantom

            Islam. Dumbass.

Atheists will last a New York minute.

          • Well that is not *my* death cult, so the remark still makes no sense. And my donkey is actually quite noisy.

I am not of the view the cure for “the motherload of bad ideas” (Islam) is the obscurantist faith that burned heretics, brought us countless religious wars and all manner of irrational stupidities along with a few useful insights.

          • The Phantom

Always with the same thing, you guys. I blame the schools.

You want to see -war-, check out what the Mooselimbs have been doing these last 700 years in India. Compare and contrast the Holy Roman Empire with the Ottoman Empire. Ottomans make the Catholics look like a bunch of choir boys. Compare and contrast the Turks with the Brits. for the last 300 years.

You will see some interesting contrasts. Christian rule in the Middle ages was rough. Mooselimb rule -stayed- in the Middle Ages, and its still there.

Burning heretics? They’ve been doing that this week in Iraq and Syria. This. Week.

Selling women into slavery? Happening this week. Oh, and not just in Iraq, its happening in Bangladesh. And Africa. Yep, de Black Man being sold into slavery, in Africa, right fucking now. Boko Haram.

One religion seeking to slay all the followers of another one? Budhists vs. Mooselimbs in Indonesia, Mooselimbs losing. Or how about Mooselimbs vs. animists in Sudan, Mooselimbs are winning that one. Or back to India again, the Punjab.

You know why there are Sikhs? Mooselimbs liked to kill -everybody- in the town, and the Hindus who finally got tired of their shit became the Sikhs. Mooselimbs are STILL DOING IT, in the Punjab, same as the last 700 years. Sikhs are still kicking their asses, every damn day, same as always.

So really? You should be thanking God that you live in a Christian country and not some Mooselimb/Hindu/Bhuddist controlled nightmare.

          • But I do not live in a Christian country, I live in an overwhelmingly non-religious one and like that just fine thanks. I have no interest in swapping one set of irrationality for another.

And the fact the Muslims are worse than the Christians these days is undeniably true, much like Bubonic plague is worse than malaria. But thankfully it is not a choice between one or the other. There is no invisible imaginary friend out there who will make the Muslim boogie man go away if only we all pray to him. Indeed much of western Christianity is as poisonously leftist as its secular fellow travellers. The threat comes from multicultural leftists preventing civil society from functioning, because without them, Muslims in Britain are a trivial problem.

          • Louise

            The usual atheistic tripe.

          • So no actual argument to make I see. Funny really, I mostly have these arguments with Muslims, who are usually as inept at fighting their corner (that said I doubt it will be as easy to outrage you and get you to go off the deep end).

          • Clink9

          • Not just cats but also PORN!

          • mobuyus

Islam, are you that stupid there is only one death cult in the news every day every where in the world and that’s islam. Death to the infidel, death to the Jews death to the unbelievers death to apostates, death to takfiri, death to the crusaders. You know, islam that’s the death cult I allude to, achmed. You should be ashamed to belong to it, but you welfare bum islamics have no shame.

          • You seem very confused. You think I am a muslim on welfare?

          • mobuyus

Prove to me that you are not an islamic on welfare. I never said you were a muslim welfare bum. I said you were an islamic welfare bum.

    • Louise

Yes it is. Godlessness will yield to a severe Dystopia. Or a Caliphate.

      • Nah. And there is nothing Godless about a Caliphate and a great many dystopias have been religious. Indeed any religion that takes itself seriously is no better than a caliphate.

        • The Phantom

I suggest you look up what Mooselimbs do to atheists. There’s a special section in the Koran. I won’t spoil the surprise for you.

          • I know what they do. Which is why I am all for dropping bombs on them.

          • The Phantom

Uh huh. Without Christians, nobody will care to resist them. Why bother, its just religion right? Can’t we all just get along?

They’ll be dropping bombs on you.

          • What you think you have to pray to some imaginary entity to want to drop bombs on people who wish you harm? You need to get out more.

        • Louise

I didn’t say Caliphates were Godless. Learn to read. Have fun in your disgusting Dystopia.

          • Louise

Which will be worse than anything yet seen in human history. Enjoy!

          • My “dystopia” is one in which people deal with reality rather than praying to figments of their imagination.

          • Louise

*Yawn* Your Dystopia is already hopelessly out of touch with Reality. The Lunatics are already running the Asylum. Have fun when they catch up with you.

  • Louise

The Protestant Revolt is to blame.

    • The Phantom

Pfft. The Protestant Revolt began the Industrial Revolution. What started it was socialists in the 1970’s, who realized they’d never make Westerners go along with 70% taxation, so they rigged the ballot box with immigration.

That and the fact that the commies and the homosexuals took over Catholic and Anglican Seminaries, probably before WWII and certainly by the 1960s.

      • Louise

The rot set in before that and was almost entirely the result of the destruction of the Catholic Faith by the New (Fake) Religion.

        • Heh, that is like listening to children in a playground arguing over who has the best invisible imaginary friend.

          • Louise

Atheist says “Imaginary friend” to a Christian. Wow. Seriously, is that the best you’ve got? Do you have anything resembling an argument?

          • So make an argument that might convince me there is such a thing as God and the supernatural. Secular more-or-less capitalist (kinda sorta) western civilisation is what makes the guns and butter we depend on, so I just do not see why anyone needs to worry about the vast majority of people in Britain being secular.

          • Louise

So are you saying Christians or other religious societies are incapable of producing either guns or butter? Western civilisation is a product more of the Catholic Faith than anything else, although it saved the best things from antiquity and partially built on those. Neither the Roman nor Greek civilisations were atheistic, however. The reason to worry is that if you do not have a clear moral code from outside of yourself, you rely on ad hoc ethics. You will always do what suits you. That will invariably lead to the strong killing the weak. All while you get to believe you’re a Nice Person. It’s quite a lark! I can see why you like it.

          • >>”So are you saying Christians or other religious societies are incapable of producing either guns or butter?”

Not at all. I am just saying that modern capitalist secular societies do that just fine and religions is not really needed.

            >>”The reason to worry is that if you do not have a clear moral code from outside of yourself, you rely on ad hoc ethics.”

Not really. Moral theories do not *require* religion. Now I do think that Catholic theories do provide some useful insights into many ethical questions, and the Aristotelian roots of Aquinas are clear, but frankly all that works just fine if you edit ‘God’ out of it. Indeed Rand has sometimes been described as ‘Godless Thomism’ (not that I am actually a Randian as I prefer Popper’s conjectural epistemology). Personally I am an advocate of objective reality and thus moral theories with an objective basis. I do not see how you can have an ad hoc moral theory.

          • Louise

“Not at all. I am just saying that modern capitalist secular societies do that just fine and religions is not really needed” — well, yeah, but so what? There is much more to a civilisation than “stuff.”

I think you’ll find that unless there is a presence of religion and the sense of a Judge, atheists will merely pick the “moral theory” which best suits whatever their current wishes are.

          • Britain *is* a secular nation and there *is* no supernatural ‘judge’, and that is not because I wished him away.

Contrary to what my rather provocative remarks might suggests, I am actually not anti-religious, I just don’t believe and see that pretty much everyone around me also does not believe. In France I often find people who are very anti-religious, but in the UK, religion is merely an irrelevance in most people’s lives greeted with a shrug.

And yet I do not see a collapse of societal morality around me. Indeed the most grotesque moral lapses seem to come from self described religious people (who are also self described Muslims I might add).

          • mobuyus

You are young and well versed in words but you’re really fucken stupid. I can tell.

          • Wait.

            Are you still here?

  • Alain

When you stand for everything, you stand for nothing, which pretty much sums up their demise.

It might help if the clergy started learning the Holy Scripture instead of the latest political doctrines.

Love it being a longbow user and fan.

  • The Phantom

Christianity has not been “withering away”. Its been under attack from the Left since WWI, and churches these days are generally the meetinghouses of Leftists.

See the United Church of Canada for elucidation. I haven’t been inside a United Church for 25 years, except the odd Christmas Eve. Because there’s very little Christianity there, mostly schmoozing, Tai Chi, Yoga and cheap daycare.

Furthermore Christianity is not shrinking among natives per se, it is that non-Christians are being immigrated in their -millions- to displace the native born. Remove the immigration and the problem goes away.

Cue screams of RAAAACIST in 3, 2, 1…

    • Immigration is fine, just as long as the welfare state gets dismantled. Immigration *and* a welfare state, now *that* is not going to end well.

  • Brett_McS

China is rapidly turning into a Christian nation. The Chinese dictators aren’t happy about it, but they are even less happy about Muslims.
