After Thai crackdown and refusal of Indonesia and Malaysia to take boat people, Asia’s people smugglers close up shop

The rickety internet huts have fallen silent in the crowded camps of displaced Rohingya Muslims in western Myanmar, no one comes anymore to bargain for the release of loved ones being held for ransom in Thailand and Malaysia.

“Before, every day at least 10 to 15 people would come here to negotiate with human traffickers,” said Tun Win, a young man who offers a video-call service from one of the bamboo and thatch huts, “Now, it’s nothing.”

For now at least, the smugglers who preyed for years on the misery of Myanmar’s Rohingya appear to be going out of business, and Asia’s most acute migrant crisis since the ‘boat people’ exodus at the end of the Vietnam War is ebbing.

Until last month, their grim trade ran like clockwork…

People smugglers can be stopped. The Europeans are being fools.

Australia also turned back one of these boats a few days ago, leaving the smugglers with simply nowhere to go.

Any idiot could have figured out that if you remove the reward, they stop trying to come. By accepting them countries are not only rewarding the illegal invaders but also the human traffickers. Why does the rest of the Western world refuse to accept the truth?

Australia seems to have figured it out. But the EU won’t hear of it.

It didn’t come to us Aussie without a lot of kicking and screaming.

        • Frau Katze

True. And a leftist govt would change it.

          • Sir Roderick Spode

That is exactly what happened. We had a long serving Conservative Prime Minister in John Howard who was in office too long, went senile and didn’t hand over to his Deputy. The Conservatives got booted and one of the first things Labor did was slacken the Laws on Asylum seekers. Pretty soon there were boat loads of genuine refugees but many sketchy criminal types. I knew some staff at one processing detention centre – some very nasty bods went through. It was chaos, lots of ship wrecks and drownings. After the Conservatives got back in it was tightened back up to the howls of outrage from the Labour / Greens. This was going to start a war with Indonesia / make us world pariahs etc. The flow of refugees stopped.

    • Because it makes sense.

Ah, the Vietnam boat people. When the State Department asked if we would sponsor any of these refugees, I inquired if the typist in my office section had made it out. If she had and she were still single, I would have married her on the spot. She was all a man could want, a kind soul, an intellect, and she was as beautiful as any movie star.

    • Frau Katze

But the Vietnamese weren’t Muslims. That makes a huge difference.

      • Sir Roderick Spode

Whilst the Vietnameese did leave in boats they then joined a UN Refugee program and got sent to the host nation in an orderly fashion.

    ‘The Europeans ar being fools’

The Europeans are doing what they always do. Creating social conditions that lead to unrest followed by open warfare.
