United Church of Canada: Hamilton Conference wants to ‘review’ case of ordained atheist Gretta Vosper

A body within the United Church of Canada has passed a proposal calling for the liberal denomination to review the questions it poses during ordination in light of controversy surrounding a clergywoman who came out as an atheist 14 years ago.

The Ontario-based Hamilton Conference approved the proposal on Sunday that seeks to have the UCC’s General Counsel order a “broad based and theological review” of ordination standards…

…The Rev. Peter Hartmans, conference executive secretary for Hamilton, told CP [The Christian Post] that the resolution did not go into specifics as to what should be changed…

“The proposal does not ask for specific changes, it asks for a ‘broad based and theological review of the Basis of Union part Eleven (11),'” said Rev. Hartmans, adding that “it is not presuming the outcome of that review.”

Hamilton Conference’s proposal came not long after news broke that Rev. Vosper was to be called for an interview as part of a process to determine how effective her ministry can be since she’s an atheist…

    Not an Onion article?

    • Drunk_by_Noon

Actually the Onion DID have a story very similar to this maybe a dozen or so years ago.

      • Brett_McS

I knew it! Last year’s Onion spoof, next year’s headline.

    • Frau Katze

Nope. She’s been there for 14 years.

      • LauraS

I think she came out as an atheist in 2001 or so. Their “review” of her effectiveness is nearly 14 years too late. Typical United Church. I wonder why they are investigating her now–I believe she had their approval to stay in the pulpit after complaints were made when she announced her atheism.

So the “United Church of Canada” has about as much theological legitimacy as Jim Jones’ “People’s Temple”?
    What are they?
The local branding of the Church of England?

    • Rosenmops

They were formed in the 1920’s when the Methodists and Presbyterians merged. The national office of the church is run by bat shit crazy Marxists, and most of the ministers are leftist fools. Last year they voted to divest Israel.
Most of the people who actually attend the church are very old people who have been attending all their life. I predict they will convert most of their churches to mosques in the next 20 years, at which point all the gays, Marxists and feminists will be shown the door.

      • Frau Katze

        Summed up perfectly.

      • DD_Austin

The United church won it’s Darwin award long ago

I look at the UCC as the minor leagues for the NDP. I grew up in the United Church when it was a church with a theology. I didn’t leave the UCC, it left me. Luckily I married a Lutheran Girl, converted, and it was like going home.

      • stellap

I remember when the United Church was more like the Presbyterians. That was in the 1950’s. The church I attended is still the same denomination, except they have no members to speak of any more.

    • Minicapt

They’re a bit ahead of the CoE, and the Episcopals.

  • WalterBannon

As an atheist myself, I have to say that an Atheist has NO business being a member of a church, let alone being a subversive fifth columnist minister within it who is working to undermine the organization’s core values. This is highly unethical, and as an atheist this disturbs me to see yet another buffoon like her who will be causing the rest of us to be painted as unethical pricks. In fact, if atheists had a church, I would be calling for her to kicked out of OUR church too for her lack of ethics, so don’t know what the united Church is thinking here with allowing this to continue.

    • G

Thank you Mr. Bannon. I’m a Christian, (not a very good one though). I appreciate your live & let live attitude. It’s rare and admirable. Have a good one.

  • Norman_In_New_York

Vosper’s prayer: “Thank God I’m an atheist.”

    • Gary

But she won’t go live in an Atheists nation or islamic state, she has it too good in canada bilking the Charity status rules while bashing canada and the same religion that keeps her safe in canada.

  • Micky C.

I’m glad Oakley doesn’t have the Culture War on 640AM anymore. I couldn’t stand listening to this cow’s voice anymore. McVety did Christians a disservice too.

    • canminuteman

Doesn’t he? I thought he did but I only get to listen to him a bit here and there because my commute is not that far, and now it’s summer I ride my bike. I’ve been listening to Oakley on the radio for at least 15 years. He does a great show.

    • Gary

I noticed how she NEVER attacked islam and muhammed as she does to Christ or Jews.
What was odd though that was she thought the gay church in Toronto was just fine because she agreed with THAT version of jesus that approves abortion , pedophilia, gay marriage , hamas .
One day she will have followers exalting her book and having a Temple to praise her with statues and prayers , she will become that same figure she now mocks for the idiot followers worshipping the unseen God .
One day she went on a rant about Corporate welfare when the money to go to social services, so I emailed Oakley to ask her if that means she would get rid of the $1.1 billion CBC so them money could buy food and shoes for children in low income single parent homes.
Gretta said she wouldn’t axe it because the CBC has value and benefits the people.
So basically, she is against some Corporate welfare when it suits her, and screw the children with their whines for shoes and food.

  • andycanuck

No problem. The Anglicans can sign her up and make her a bishop.

    • ntt1

that’s a non starter she is nowhere beamy enough and although the hair is the mandatory no fuss cut it has yet to go blue. but give her time, her politics seem to be right on with the latest bishops though .

  • canminuteman

I’ve told this story here before, but I will again anyway. My sons attend scouts at the local United Church hall. I remember going there to pick them up after one of their meetings and seeing flier on the church bulletin board advertising church run workshops on Buddhism! How insane is that. The church is trying to convert it’s own members to another religion.

  • “Progressive Christianity”, cuz Jim’s 1 bad batch of Kool-aid ruined “Apostolic Socialism”.

A society that believes you don’t need female chromosomes to be a woman will believe you don’t need Christ to be a Christian. That, and so much more, follows.

Brace up folks, for the fast part of our civilizational degeneracy is approaching.

  • bob e

out of her freakin’ tree ..

  • BillyHW

Isn’t there a muslim anglican she-priest out there somewhere too?

  • G

These assholes always start out their attacks with “Let’s have a conversation about”…(whatever outrageous B.S. they dream up this week).

But they don’t want to have a conversation at all. This is just a means of furthering their agenda.

    Stuff your conversation.

  • ‘Not the Nine O’Clock News’ did a great feature on this around 1980 with a wet vicar being multifaith about satanism. I must find it on YouTube.
