Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov

Today in Crazy – Assed Dictators…

Turkmenistan’s equestrian-mad leader has been honoured with a huge monument in the capital city, featuring his likeness atop a golden horse.

Cast in bronze and covered in 24-carat gold leaf, the statue of Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov soars over 20 metres from the ground and is perched on an outcrop of white marble cliff.

Berdymukhamedov, who has run the country since 2006 and is accused of presiding over one of the most pervasive personality cults in the world, is widely known as Arkadag, or the patron.

Nice work if you can get it…

Oh come on, let the guy have his fun, compared to other dictators this is pretty harmless and you can always melt it down for the gold after he dies. The pedestral is reusable so the next dictator will spend even less. I call it a solid investment.

    • Always a silver lining;)

He’s not quite as bad as previous guy in Turkmenistan but he’s clearly showing sign of crazy dictator syndrome.

      Turkmenistan is a weird place.

Its is not crazy, for dictators this is pretty normal behaviour, nothing out of ordinary, almost every dictator does that (and a lot of people who are not regarded as dictators in general). It would be more strange if he wasnt doing something like this.

        • Frau Katze

It attracts a certain type, I suppose. The dictator of neighboring Uzbekistan is a tough cookie but not so much into statues and stuff.

Coming soon to Capitol Hill as soon as Mitch & Boehner clear the funding and get Obama to pose for it.
