Don’t Run Red Lights

  • DMB

I heard of instances on many occasions of people running red lights or stop signs in rural areas just because they think there is unlikely to be another vehicle approaching the intersection only to find out the hard way that there was one. In this situation were the cyclist was in a populated urban area to run a red light makes the cyclist a very dangerous driver since the probability of a collision is substantially higher.

    • My impression is he simply was not paying attention.

I have seen that in Toronto. – Not crashes but people blowing red lights through inattention.

Exactly. There is a stop sign near my place which people often don’t notice because of the background. Twice I have been walking by as a T-bone accident happened. The funny thing is that there is a police station on the corner.

    There are old, experienced bikers.
    There are young reckless bikers.
There aren’t any old reckless bikers.

I heard it said long ago that if you survive the first year driving a cycle, you will probably be OK.

      • simus1

A long time biker and work buddy who got nailed years ago by an incompetent driver in a pickup said the pain from his broken leg and pelvis didn’t really register while he was jammed up between the pavement and the engine’s hot oil sump which was slowly burning into his flesh. His screams kept everyone in the general area aware that he was still alive.
Paranoia also helps a lot but it’s not a perfect defense.

I like how everybody rushed to try and help.
