Shocking: Member of Congress refers to Waco biker gangs as thugs; CNN consults expert Sally Kohn

Did Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York really just refer to the members of the gentlemen’s motorbike enthusiast club that recently had an unfortunate altercation in Waco, Texas, as “thugs”?

We’re so confused. No less of an authority than Roots drummer Questlove declared after the Baltimore riots that the word “thug” is racist code. Geraldo Rivera eventually reached the same conclusion, declaring it was time to retire the “T” word…

  • just a thought

    Long past time Geraldo retired.

I realise that to many I live in a strange and foreign land and these comments may not be relevant to you but I can only take it as I found it.
A few miles from where I live there is a “bikers caff”. It is close to a series of high speed minor roads where bikers love to try-out their machines on good weather days and show off their bikes any time. A few years back I took my grandson to take a look.
There were perhaps only a little short of 200 bikes, all neatly parked in rows, all in beautiful condition. The bikers were busy in the caff, downing the classic English beverage for bikers – mugs of tea! Not, unfortunately, bone china.
Unsure of our welcome (let’s face it, we were the only ones not in leathers) we went in for a mug. The manageress, complete with nose rings and tattoos, was in her early 30s and could not have been more friendly. We were welcomed with open arms – even more so when we did a tour of the parking strip and admired the bikes with overwhelming ignorance on my part. Makers name plus a number (engine size?) is the limit of my background, never having even ridden as pillion in my entire 6+ decades.
The owners helped me understand a little more with discussion of top speed, engine torque, the importance of correct “gear” (protective leathers??) etc. etc.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours. We could not have felt safer or more welcome anywhere. Everyone (NO exceptions) made us feel they liked us being there. Almost made me feel like I wanted to buy a machine and join in until common sense reared its ugly head!

I don’t know much about bikers gangs. Looking back on my life, it is extremely dull. Legal job, kids, retire, pension.

Nice try, Frau, but we all know you’re really a hardcore biker moll who’s wanted in 3 provinces.
