Young woman shot in Turkey’s southeast for joining song contest

Mutlu Kaya

A 19-year-old woman is in a critical condition after being shot in the head by an unknown assailant in southeastern Turkey, allegedly over her decision to join a song contest broadcast on national TV.

The aggressor reportedly shot at Mutlu Kaya through her window at 03:30 a.m. on May 18, after breaking into the garden of her house in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır. Kaya was seriously wounded by a bullet that went through her head.

Kaya was initially rushed to a local hospital but was later transferred to a larger hospital in Diyarbakır.

She had recently joined a popular song contest where she successfully completed the contest’s preselection and caught the attention of Sibel Can, a famous Turkish singer…

…There is rising concern in Turkey about acts of violence against women. In 2014 alone, 294 women were killed, with 47 percent for wanting to make independent decisions, according to a report by the Stop Women Homicides Platform…

No motive at the time: it is possible it could be personal. Or it could be related to Islamists who strongly object to women singing (or doing much of anything at all) in public.

Muslims often assure us that the koran, being the clearest, most coherent book ever written (pause for laughing fit) explains how Islam gives women dignity, prestige and place in society.

Of course, that place is at home, and the dignity comes from staying out of sight and not getting shot, the prestige from having 5+ children.

Diyarbakir is a Kurdish province in south-eastern Turkey. Honor killings are a huge problem in Kurdistan. If you look a little closer most of the Turkish honour killings you read about occurring in Europe are actually committed by Kurds.
