Classical Mythology Too Triggering for Columbia Students

In Columbia University’s student newspaper, four members of the school’s student Multicultural Affairs Advisory Board call on professors to be more sensitive when teaching provocative or controversial material… such as the Roman classical poet Ovid.

‘During the week spent on Ovid’s “Metamorphoses,” the class was instructed to read the myths of Persephone and Daphne, both of which include vivid depictions of rape and sexual assault. As a survivor of sexual assault, the student described being triggered while reading such detailed accounts of rape throughout the work. However, the student said her professor focused on the beauty of the language and the splendor of the imagery when lecturing on the text. As a result, the student completely disengaged from the class discussion as a means of self-preservation. She did not feel safe in the class.’

  • Why do these idiots even leave the house in the morning?

    • Canadian

      To complain.

    • Frau Katze

How are they going to function in real life, outside the university?

      • J. C.

They’ll just get jobs with the government and proceed to make our lives Hell…

    • BillyHW

Because everyone has to go to college now. Let’s face it, some men are only good for lifting heavy things, and some women are only good for laying back, and thinking of England.

      • J. C.

Few of them can find England on a map nowadays.

    • WalterBannon

to ruin the world for everyone else

  • Allan

Poor sensitive little flower. Spray her with herbicide.

    • BillyHW

      She’s a snowflake.

  • Xavier

If it’s that bad, why isn’t she at an all girls school?

    • Alain

Are you kidding? If it is a competent girls’ school, she would be taught the same things. No, these people belong in a mental institution, not an educational institution.

  • eMan14

I’m totally mystified by these type of people. I don’t recall growing up surrounded by such people. But the scary part is that these people will help and have helped shape our world.
And I’m sure it started with how are children are being taught (indoctrinated) in school. From kindergarten thru university.
What a bunch of wusses we are raising.

    • UCSPanther

I see this “SJW” movement as a consequence of the “self-esteem” movement, as many SJW cultists remind me of whining children who don’t want to grow up or learn to tolerate the viewpoints of others.

Their arguments are generally excuses/rationalizations of their self-destructive and shameful behavior, and attacks against those who dare to speak out against them.

I believe that they will be forced to grow up in a traumatic way, and the more traumatic, the better…

      • Justin St.Denis

We have friends who are parents to a couple of SJWs. The poor things would settle for their little snowflakes at least learning to do their own laundry, clean their own rooms, maybe sew or knit or pay for their own dry cleaning and repairs. Funny how parents facilitate what aggravates them most, commented my wife. 😉

  • BillyHW

    LOL non-STEM degrees!

  • B Beaches

My kids can find no suitable peers for intelligent conversation! I fear they never will!

    • Justin St.Denis

Ours didn’t until they started attending colleges and universities abroad. Then they grew friends like tomatoes! And moved out! Yay! Then they married and remembered to invite us! Yay X 2!

Our well-adjusted grandkids attend Waldorf schools and actually have friends! But, like all good things, it comes with a price tag.

What do you expect when a school has a Multicultural Affairs Advisory Board?

The members naturally feel they must advise multiculturally, i.e. stupidly, as they express their elite sensitivity by discovering new areas of complaint.

  • Maggat

Well then, go take basket weaving, you bloody idiot.

  • Jay Currie

Well no one said college made you smarter.

  • Shebel

She should have taken Political Science.

  • no4

Apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order… what have the Romans done for us?

    • El Martyachi
    • Petrilia

Smarty pants, the Romans gave us everything. They only fell because they got too in love with themselves, just like this article. They let all the madmen in,so like today, too bad we couldn’t learn from it

  • WalterBannon

    “progressives” should all be euthanized.

  • Hard Little Machine

    they’re not cowards they’re narcissists

  • Paulla

This woman needs to get a grip on reality. She needs to separate the present from the past. Terrible things happen to lots of people, but you tell yourself “the things that hurt you then can’t hurt you now”.
