Fall of Berlin: ‘Of course I was afraid. I was 17 years old’

Gerda Drews was a teenager living in Berlin during World War Two We have permission to use from http://elinorflorence.com/blog/berlin-battle

Gerda Drews remembers Russian troops storming into Berlin in April 1945 knowing two phrases in German: “Watches” and “Women, come”

And the Russians still wonder why they are hated by all of their neighbors.

I once tried to read a newly-published book describing the immediate aftermath of WWII — the mass-refugee problem, the mass starvation, the lack of housing. The book was too depressing for me to finish. Some of the pics on this past show the utter devastation in Germany. The background scenes in the movie “Judgement at Nuremburg” show the devastation as well. The aftermath of the war remains unknown to people today.

What the effin Nazis started, the allies finished. No regrets for that era.

      • chuck_2012

Yes i agree but the German citizens took it on the chin for Adolph Hitler and his gang. And the Russians were very brutal. War is bad.

        • truthdareisay

German citizens for the most part were in cabarets and singing and dancing while Jews were being gassed when the war was still going well for them. I have absolutely no sympathy for the millions who raised their arms to a Heil Hitler salute with a smile! They were not that innocent.. Ask any German Jew!!

          • chuck_2012

            true they were not innocent.

          • Drunk_by_Noon

Yeah, I’m sure all those girls raped by the Russians are in total agreement with you.
Is that what they taught you in synagogue?

          • truthdareisay

Hey.. you’re not drunk by noon.. you’re drunk in the morning and that remark shows me who you are.

          • Drunk_by_Noon

What, that I’m against indiscriminate rape of an an entire civilian population?
Yes, please tell me, and everyone reading here, just EXACTLY who I am!
            Do it.
            Do it now.

I already know what you are.

          • truthdareisay

            1. Not every Russian soldier raped. 2. An entire civilian population was not raped 3. You almost spit out the word synagogue 4. Not one word about what was done to Jews and others by those lovely Germans of that time . Write whatever u want now.. I’m done.

          • Doug Kursk

Not every Russian soldier, just the majority of them…esp.in Berlin.

Do the German people have to pay in perpetuity?

          • truthdareisay

How do you know “the majority of them” were you there? I don’t know I was not there. 2. Don’t worry about paying in perpetuity.. There will be no survivors left very soon. The money will stop soon enough.

          • Drunk_by_Noon

It would appear that some would say yes. I think he’s disappointed that the survivors were not all exterminated in turn. Well, at least after all their women were raped.

          • Drunk_by_Noon

Well then, let’s turn your post around and see if you still like it then. It’s a good logic exercise to see if your ideas pass a certain sanity test.

Not every German was a Nazi and not every Nazi was gassing Jews.
Not every Jew was killed by the Nazis.

Now please explain to one and all here why the mass rape of German women by the Red Army was a good thing.

          • Waffle

Very good!! But don’t waste your breath. I don’t think she ever took a class in logic in her life. She just likes the sound of her own voice and the look of her verbal diarrhea in print.

      • El Martyachi

        The Russians were never allies.

    • WalterBannon

sounds like the immediate aftermath of joining the EU

We should have saved a few nukes to drop on Germany AFTER the war was over just to drive the point home.

    • chuck_2012

no. they were beaten to the ground for sure. no nukes necessary.

    • El Martyachi

Dropping one on the Kremlin would have been better.

  • Norman_In_New_York

    Just two points.

    1. Russian casualties during the war, civilian as well as military, were horrific, upwards of 20 million. The Russians believed that turnabout is fair play.

    2. Eisenhower could have sent the Ninth U.S. Army into Berlin ahead of the Russians. After the great victory of the Ruhr Pocket, that army had an open road to the German capital, and its populace would have happily surrendered en masse rather than face a Russian Army bent on retribution.
