Ontario to sell 60% of Hydro One, allow beer sales in grocery stores

Ontario will sell off 60 per cent of electricity utility Hydro One to the private sector, allow 450 grocery stores across the province to sell beer and impose a new tax on the beverage.

And it will shake up The Beer Store – including by appointing a new “Beer Ombudsman” to handle complaints against the company – in a bid to make the private retailer more transparent and force it to sell more craft beer.

And she adds a new beer tax….

That’s really gonna go over big here…beer at the inConvenience store…PERFECT. To go along with the “Mac’s Mart Robbery-of-the-Week”…

Why would anyone invest money in the Ontario Hydro turkey, laden with bad contracts, bad management, and Bob Chiapet (no brains, just greens) Chiarelli as Minister of Energy?

As to new taxes, one day she will cross the line, the people will become angry, and the veneer of civility will disappear. A beer tax might just be the catalyst…

    • How I wish.

      • Ottawa Eyes

I bet a number of well-connected Liberals will make a fortune as consultants or lawyers on this deal just like on all the green energy providers that have ended up doubling our electricity prices.

        • That is standard operating procedure.

Years ago, with respect to the landscape-destroying wind turbines north and west of Orangeville and into Grey-Bruce County, a friend who works in the energy sector referred to the GREEN REICH run by the Ontario Libtards. That phrase pretty much says it all.

It’s even worse with this privatization scheme and of course some very wealthy Liberal party individuals will benefit. *barf*

If a new tax on beer is all it takes to get the people of this province off of their asses then they would have done so the innumerable times a new sin tax has been levied on the popular beverage. There will be the odd peep, maybe even a few people carrying signs at their local beer store, but that will be about it.
Ontario has been made over into a land full of sheeple

  • El Martyachi

With apologies to non-torontonian Ontarians…. I hope the Saudis buy it.

  • Yusuf_Al_Kafir

Why not let alllllll grocery stores sell beer? And why a new tax on the beer?

Because it’s the Liberals doing it.
Meddling in private business and creating new taxes are two of their favourite things.

    • It’s another half assed Liberal boondoggle.

      • Yusuf_Al_Kafir

They could fuck up a two car parade.

        • Clausewitz

No, they could fuck up a one car parade.

    • WalterBannon

Because ALL grocery stores did not bribe Wynne, only one

  • Brett_McS

What’s the home brew movement like in Canada?

    • Frau Katze

Pretty popular. But it takes work. ( I’ve made wine, not beer, which I hate, and it’s quite a bit of work. Plus there’s the special equipment. I haven’t done it for ages but it was kind of fun. Produces a great deal of wine).

    • Not enormous.

    • Clink9

I think it peaked in the 90’s during a bad recession. NDP and Bob Rae in power. Lots of small craft brewing companies here now.

25 odd years ago “brew on premises” breweries were popping up like flies. Yu went into a store, they provided the brew kettles and all the ingredients and you made beer. It got so popular that the big breweries lobbied for it to be taxed, the price went up a lot, and most of them went out of business. There are still some around. I used to do it a lot, but I don’t drink enough to justify making 5 cases at a time. Some people home brew, but it’s not that common. I have done it, but can’t be bothered an more. It’s a lot of work, I don’t have much room (or a constant temperature storage place for fermentation, and I don’t drink a lot anyway.

    • andycanuck

The you-brew places (admittedly contrasted with home-brewing) were hurting the breweries, their unions and their government-sanctioned sales monopoly badly enough that the one-time-only leftist New Democrat Party provincial government taxed the shit out of them to put them out of business.

Addendum: Doh! Didn’t read all the replies before commenting.

      Yeah, like they said.

If a Conservative government sold off Hydro One it would be a tragedy.
If a Liberal government sells off Hydro One it’s ‘Gold, Jerry, Gold’!

Just curious: how much is a 12 pack in Ontario?
The cheapest to be had here is Sleeman, at 15.00$ a pack, plus 15% tax.

    • canminuteman

That’s in the ball park for what name brand Canadian beer is here in Ontario, I suspect that Sleeman’s is more maybe 18$ for 12. I usually buy craft beer brands an about 3 dollars half liter can. If I am feeling cheap, there is a very nice imported ale called “Abbott” that is 2.10 a can, and a German lager called “Spatz” for 2.10 a can that are good value.

      • Brenda2600

Actually Sleemans is $22.95 right now for 12 bottles as it is considered a “PREMIUM” beer.

        • Canadian

And the Wynne thing is gonna tax it more?
I guess our very own libs will follow suit.

      • Canadian

I like Guiness a lot too.
Or just about all german beers.

  • WalterBannon

why is that crook Wynne still not facing criminal charges for her part in the illegal deletion of govt email records?

clearly we have some crooks in the judicial system and law enforcement who are on the take

    anything, anything except cut spending
teachers , unions are absolute deities.

I would NOT privatise Hydro at all
it is as important as food, shelter, clothing !!!!
I would KEEP THE BEER STORE as it makes a lot of money for Govt to help fund ooooweeee gooooey & necessary programs
A LOT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE PEOPLE MAKE THEIR TAX FUNDED LIVING BY HAVING A CONSTANT STREAM OF UNEMPLOYEED !!!!!!! where is the incentive for some Govt programs to do their job …
