Saturday night Cossack Horse Tricks

I bet you can’t do this!

  • I tried it with Pip, he didn’t like it one bit.

Plus the Hawks are circling our building again, K won’t let him on the balcony. I think that’s why he’s uncooperative.

    • Minicapt

      Damn Chicago!

  • Minicapt
    • Jay Currie

All that and they pick up litter.

I think I see how the Russians are beating Nato time after time.

      • Minicapt

Nope, they’re still rather slow in the “copy stuff” department.

  • I bet I can.

    • Eastwood was the Man With No Name. You are the Man With No Shirt.

  • bob e

pretty cool bm .. if i behave can i get ta meet the blonde ..??

    • Xanthippa Socrates

Hint: ethnic Cossacs are NOT blonde – but Russians playing at Cossacks just might be…

Most moderns claiming to be Cossacks are not Cossacks – actual Cossacks were pretty thoroughly exterminated in the Gulags. But, the Russians who moved into traditional Cossack lands like to play at being Cossacks…

      • So what are they? I thought they were Ukrainians of some sort. Or something.

        • Xanthippa Socrates

A separate nation of fiercely proud horse-lords.

If you follow the ‘Game of Thrones’ tv show or have read the ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ book series by GRR Martin, the Cossacks would be a slightly more civilized version of the Dothraki.

The Tatars would be a slightly less civilized and somewhat Islamized version of the Dothraki.

Very proud and fierce and not easily bullied by the State – which is why they were marked for extermination under Stalin and all subsequent Soviet dictators.

Spoiler alert: the 5th season of the TV show (which starts tomorrow – I can’t sleep waiting for it) will depart from the books…and GRR told the TV show producers what will happen to the various characters just in case he dies before he finishes writing the series.

          • I’ve never watched or read Game Of Thrones. I’ve even given up on the stupid zombie show.

          • Xanthippa Socrates

I highly recommend the books – you can get the electronic version for very good price and it is high literature at its best.

ANYONE who enjoys following politics and political intrigue would love the books and enjoy the slightly simplified TV show. I cannot recommend both highly enough: I swear this by all the Gods, the Old and the New!

For info’s sake: the Dithraki are nomadic horse lords: individual achievement means more to them than all the bloodlines or group rights combined!

        • El Martyachi

Most people opining on the finer points of what is or isn’t a Kozak have never heard of Bohdan Khelmnitsky. Just sayin’.

  • Xanthippa Socrates

I thought Stalin exterminated both the Cossacks and the Tatars! He tried, anyways…
