I Survived The Good Friday Fish & Chips Line-Up

And as is always the case the guy just ahead of us placed an order for like 40 people.

It held the line back for so long people left and the parking lot began to empty.

Thanks Joe.

In the end Pip got his Halibut.

Happy Good Friday.

I’m making a corned beef boil.
I know, it’s not fish, but if you ever smelled corned beef cooking, you’d know it’s not really meat either, so I think I’m ecclesiastically safe.
    Happy Good Friday everyone!

    • Corned beef is Eschatologically acceptable;)

      • Drunk_by_Noon

Sent me scrambling for a dictionary as an act of penitence.

  • Frau Katze

Protestants never did the (partial) fasting thing. It’s not in the scriptures, so out it went.

    • Pagans!

      • Drunk_by_Noon

We have names for you too, bud!

    • I care not for fish but I did have a falafel sandwich.

      • I like Falafels, we don’t have a good place nearby.

        • (sigh)

I made my own with a mix.

          • Cool! I should try that.

          • It’s easy and I bake them.

          • Surele Surele

as much as I love cooking and cooked (almost) everything under the sun, I’ve never ventured to make my own falafel. My excuse? The best falafel in the GTA is just five mins. away.

          • That’s true.

I had a falafel mix and used it. It’s simple to do and I bake them. Slather that in tzatziki and it’s Flavour-Town.

        • Drunk_by_Noon

I have heard of falafels but have never had one. I’ll have to look them up.

          • Surele Surele

            be careful. highly addictive.

        • Surele Surele

make a trip North (Steeles and Bathurst area), plenty of good falafel. and now the new craze: laffa.

        Fish is funny.
Good fish is great, but bad fish is worse than fish.
Ok, maybe that’s not the best explanation possible, but it’s true.
The only line I draw is that most fresh water fish isn’t worth eating while some salt water fish is sublime.

Good ‘zillion dollar a pound’ freshly caught bluefin “toro” tastes like a prime rib, but is best when you eat it raw. You would swear you were eating anything other than any fish.

San Diego or Baja style fish tacos are some kind culinary genius that people that are not from arround here wence when they hear of them, but can’t stop eating them after they have had their first.

Fresh caught Alaskan salmon cooked over a mesquite fire is also surreal, and once again, tastes like anything other than a fish.

I just wished I had gotten turned on to decent fish much earlier in life instead of thinking it was all gross like oily mackerel or sardines. That stuff the cat can have.

        • Surele Surele

“good fish is great, but bad fish is worse than fish”. definitely borrowing that. like listening to my husband while cooking fish. hint: all the windows and doors are wide open, even with the freshest of fresh fish.

        • I don’t really like fish but a good piece of salmon every now and again is alright.

I just don’t think fish has flavour.

  • andycanuck

Fish from a box for me tonight but then I don’t have a cat.

    • Pip is not fussy…

    • Surele Surele

      that’s so sad.

Someone must have called an emergency meeting of the soggy chips and cold deep fried fish fan club or was it being shipped out in batches as ready by relay runners?.

    • It was nutty, same thing happened a few years back, what a nightmare.

      • BillyHW

Orders that big should be made the day before.

        • Surele Surele

          they should’ve hired a caterer.

  • JaedoDrax

That’s why I prefer to phone in my order, prior to going to pick it up.

  • canminuteman

That is too funny. After lounging about most of the day and not getting anything out of the freezer, we went out for fish and chips, saw the lineup then went to Swiss Chalet.

  • Alain

I think few things beat good fish and chips when done right, and fortunately we have a couple of excellent traditional English places in town. Anyway a very happy Good Friday to all the Christians here.

  • Canadian

23:35, I`m hungry, and you show me a fabulous fish and chips…..
There ought to be a law!

    • Drunk_by_Noon

I’ll also add this to the list of food you can’t readily get arround here. I’d like some at least occasionally.

      • Canadian

None around here, but I hear one is about to open 5 minutes from my house.

      • dance…dancetotheradio

Can you get good Chinese food where you are?
When we moved to Saskatoon seven years ago we were astonished that none of the Oriental restaurants served dry breaded veal.
It was such a relief when we moved back to Winnipeg to be finally able to get it again.

        • Drunk_by_Noon

Good Chinese, you mean other than buffet style?
          Not really.
I guess you could if you looked for it and we’re going to a nice place. Most of the local walk in Asian stuff is Vietnamese and Thai, and some Indian (maybe two) locally. Mostly, everything is either fast food or Mexican.

That dry breaded veal dish you mentioned, I have never heard of.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

            Buffet style Chinese, mmnnhh.
            Vietnamese and Thai, mmnnhh.
When I lived in Saskatoon the engineers I worked with loved that stuff.
Out there for lunch five times a week if they could.
$5.95 Noodle Bowl or the $6.95 Stir Fry Special.
            Just got boring.
So many Asian restaurants in Saskatoon.
And they are all coated with this patina of grease.
Especially when they come out with someone’s order of sizzling ginger beef.
Gimme some cheese and butter once in a while, huh?
Anyway, you’ve got to have had a breaded veal cutlet.
Imagine it chicken nugget sized with Chinese breading and garnished with soya sauce and lemon.
            It’s just awesome.
But, I live a thousand miles inland and don’t get real seafood so…

  • Blind Druid

I always BBQ burgers on Good Friday so the Catlicks can smell them cooking.
Of course, I also burn a huge tire fire on Earth Day as well.
